This Oxford archaeological guide to Rome is a replacement book for an older volume of the same that I had used so much that the pages were falling out! If you are primarily interested in the archaeological history of Rome from her beginnings through the late imperial period, then this is the book to have.

This guide is not a standard tour summary that just hits the highlights.
It is comprehensive and a bit academic, but if you really want to dig a little deeper into ancient Rome's structural past whether you are reading excerpts from it in your living room, or contemplating the forum from the Capitoline hill, this is the volume to have!

This is the up-dated edition of Michael Wood's classic work on the Trojan War. The new material is important in light of recent excavations at Troy. As always, Wood's books are exceptionally interesting to anyone keen on history, archaeology and travel. But, as good as the book is, the DVD of the original television series that the book accompanied is even better. I wouldn't be without either.

3.Making of the Roman Army: From Republic to Empire by: Lawrence Keppie

Books : Making of the Roman Army: From Republic to Empire
Keppie's work regarding the development of the Roman Army from the republic to the early principate does a good job of describing some of the aspects of the Roman Army: marching camp, weapons and organisation. Lacking any meaningful battle descriptions, and with somewhat long appendix section on mostly irrelevent material, nevertheless is a good introductory book for the beginner.

If you are remotely interested in the reign of Akhenaten, which most of us interested in Egyptology are, you can find enough different depictions of the man to leave you thoroughly confused. Was he a pragmatic politician out to break the power of the Amun priesthood (Aldred)? A megalomaniac who enjoyed watching his people broil in the noon-day sun (Redford)? A predecessor of Moses seeking truth in monotheism (Hornung and Lorton)? The deranged gay lover of his brother Smenkhkare (Allen Drury?) Or something else? Where Reeves sticks to the generally-agreed facts provided by recent research, he produces a good and very readable book on the Amarna period. But his own theories, many of them still controversial among Egyptologists (that Smenkhkhare was really another name for Nefertiti, that the late 18th ... Read More

6.The Ancient City: Life in Classical Athens and Rome by: Peter Connolly

Books : The Ancient City: Life in Classical Athens and Rome
Few books make ancient history come to life as brilliantly and as completely as this one. When they do, they are usually military books. The evryday life of ordinary people is hardly ever described. More than just a survey, it offers a great insight into the real conditions of life and the details we often don't even think about. Inspiring.

7.Herculaneum: Italy's Buried Treasure by: Joseph Jay Deiss

Because this book was paired with the book Pompeii, I was expecting a book full of great images. It was not! It is virtually the same book published by Harper & Row in 1966. All the pictures are black and white and about the same quality as Amedeo Maiuri's who can be forgiven as his guide to Herculaneum was published in 1962. Having read Maiuri's book, I found Deiss's descriptions very similar. A very disappointing purchase!

This is about as fine a book as you will find on this subject.
I enjoyed reading it immensely.

Out of respect for the author's hard and dedicated work I encourage you to vote the jackass one-star review below by "Jeromiah Cox" as "Inappropriate" so that it can be removed.

Pompeii Awakened is not quite what I'd expected it to be. Having recently seen the Pompeii exhibit at the Minnesota Science Museum in St. Paul, I'd expected a catalogue of finds and their cultural and historical significance, more of an interpretation of the site in terms of its place in the history of the world. Instead what the book presents is an ongoing history of the site as a cultural artifact, one which has/had value to those who were in control of it at any given time. It is also the story of an archaeological oddity that has had a significant and ongoing impact on world culture by virtue of its unique preservation. Roman culture has always had a place in Western civilization, guaranteed by the survival of its language and literature, especially through the agency of the Roman Catholic Church. The words ... 10.The Aegean Bronze Age (Cambridge World Archaeology) by: Oliver Dickinson

Books : The Aegean Bronze Age (Cambridge World Archaeology)
A well written book using up to date discoveries in archeology. Indeed the archeological evidence presented in this book is quite good focusing not only on man made artifacts but burial customs.
To my mind the subject of trade is key to this book.
It is written a scholarly fashion yet is approachable. From the archeological evidence theories are offered but the authors do not force any one position but offer them all in a level headed fashion.
You will find yourself reading it from cover to cover but cherishing it as a reference.
