A heart touching story of a young woman's experience in a a bloody war, which caused great fear for her and her family. Her memoirs from her childhood and her experiences during the war made for a book with great value, excitement and fear. Her continuous brave actions during the war show us a woman of great valor and charecter. I highly recommendment it.

Excellent book about actuall events in the late 1800's of a British Officer in Africa. The events with the two man-eating lions represents a small portion of the adventures of Patterson.

I purchased this book for my class on Conflict and Conflict Resolution at San Diego State. This book is very detailed giving all the background on Sudan the country, its different tribes and groups as well as all of the individuals who have held or are seeking power in Sudan. The book also highlights the regional players and their modivations such as Libya, Chad, Eriteria who are seeking to keep Sudan destablized for their own personal gain. The authors do an excellent job of also bring to light the international aspects as well as the local and national issues the helped to create the circumstances of the first civil war/ conflict of north vs south Sudan and then Darfur. I recently purchased this book, and I wish there were words enough to relay just how great it is. In the Company of Heros illistrates brilliantly the account of Night Stalker pilot Mike Durant, and his experience in somolian captivity. Mr. Durant may be a pilot by trade, however his story and how he tells it are amazing. This book is a great buy for anyone, but it is a MUST READ for any Army aviation pilots or aircrewmen.

This book is a must for understanding what is going on in Africa with the horror of "child soldiers." I could not believe what I was reading, nor imagine how one could heal from such an experience. We must become more informed about what is happening around the world and do what we can to help. Since this book, I have read several others that confirm what this one said.

The Great War in Africa has very few books to define it, and in some cases the better books are just windows into particular experiences. Not so with Paice's book... it treats the war in Africa as the epic that it was and deals with it in all its shades. During the 19th Century the continent of Africa was almost entirely divided up amongst the European powers (and the Ottoman Empire) and so when the Great War broke out in 1914 and caused all the European powers to be drawn in as well it was inevitable that the conflict would also involve the colonies of the belligerents. Slave is an alarmingly true story about the modern day slave trade. I could not put this book down. My heart was pounding towards the end as Mende was attempting to escape. I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to have thier eyes opened to the very disturbing fact the there are people profiting from throwing children into a lifetime of Slavery and even more disturbing is the fact that there are families that will buy and "own" slaves.

Read about the present, daily, butcherings, torturing and endless sufferings of the Darfurians. As I read this book, the atrocities reminded me of what is similarily and presently happening to the helpless Palestinians. These stories come right from the people who experienced them. I really came out of my shell, about world injustices, when first reading Jimmy Carters': Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. Jimmy Carters' book opened my eyes to the atrocities being comitted in this world - TODAY, RIGHT NOW! Also, watch the documentary on Darfur, as well as, the documentary that President Jimmy Carter recommends on the Palestinian genocide: "The Wall." Both books and DVD's will open your eyes to a whole and very ugly side of human nature. They both need lots of attention! Start by reading these 2 books and watching these ... Read More

Reunion in Barsaloi answers a lot of questions readers will have after reading her first book, White Masai and Back From Africa, the follow-up. The clear-headedness that Corinne now has about her former life and ex-husband serves her well as she makes this emotional journey back in time. Now I can't wait til she brings her daughter back to Kenya sometime in the next year or two...that should really be a fitting ending to this amazing story.
