While Ms Armstrong is very well researched on Christian and Moslem beliefs and customs, her understanding of Judaism was not as strong and it was quite apparent in my read thru. Ms Armstrong presents an out dated view of Judaism with a revengeful and jealous G-d. She would be best served by visiting an Aish Hatorah web site the next time she chooses to write about this subject.

Spencer may be known for writing relatively useless tabloids, but he clearly is not inept to author books as complicated as this. First of all, "The Truth about Muhammad" is simply a personal criticism and lacks any concrete evidence. The author has done a poor job researching the topic; furthermore, some of the authors sources can be classified as racist hate-literature.

Also, the book was poorly written and very boring. Only a white-supremacist would find this book worthwhile.

I enjoyed this book enormously. It was very insightful. It certainly changes our misconceptions regarding history and how things are connected. Although it is something that people are not used to hearing, it is necessary read, and has evidence to back up its claim. With the war on terror showing no signs of abating and as the terrorists strike all who are not in accord with their cause, this book not only provide an insight into the problem from a historical point of view, it also shows how easily Islam's distortion came about. This book changes many misconceptions. The idea of jihad is the center of it all, something that ought to be criticized or rejected for the world to be at peace.

A quote in The Union Moujik, says that the jihadists are the quasi-faithful. "they kill for the sake of reasoning, ... Read More

I listened to the audio set (6 CDs) of this book, & was really impressed by how much was conveyed in such a short time. It would be appropriate to classroom history of Islam as well. This book is very strong on understanding the Islamic view of religion & politics, religion & society needs, etc., not just a dry recitation of facts. I am really surprised at the negative reviews I read here, I thought this was a very approachable text. Give it a try!

This diligently researched and superbly written book acts as an easy to digest key, actively bent on unlocking the history of Islam. Aslan, an Iranian-born author, brings a viewpoint often missing from Western understandings of the Islamic religion. Aslan tackles often thorny and complex historical occurrences and theological viewpoints, translating them into an understandable and synthesized whole. Not completely scholarly, Aslan also injects personal experiences at key moments to bring an often distant religion into the realm of the personal.

A great part of this book carefully lays out the critical first centuries of the Islamic faith, following the divergent paths the first practitioners followed, practitioners who were effected by social, historical, and theological forces sometimes outside their control.

Prior to September 11th, Bernard Lewis was not given much respect in academic circles because of his less than politically correct view of the Middle East. After September 11th, Bernard Lewis has become the foremost historian of the region. Many liberal faculty members still refute his arguments, but for those of us whose eyes were opened when the towers came crashing down, Lewis is undoubtedly in a class of his own.

If you want to understand the historical roots of Islamic conflict, then this book is an absolute must. It's a quick and enjoyable read which is extremely rare in a liberal dominated market where history books all make the same revisionist Marxist argument that historical events are the natural evolution of material conditions beyond our ability to control. Lewis is balanced in his evaluation of Islamic ... Read More

This book has a very detailed description of the whole event. Well written in a typcial novel style, the book goes through all the happenings in a manner that keeps the reader engaged though I felt this book could be shorter and still have the same sort of impact as it does.
An ideal book for a future movie script on an important event in the history of islam.

9.Muhammad: A Biography of the Prophet by: Karen Armstrong

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Muhammad: A Biography of the Prophet
This is a good book that attempts to introduce Muhammad in the most positive light possible: Armstrong believes that Westerners do not understand enough about Islam and its founder, and so produces this argument. It is long on reason and seeking to find common ground - essentially in monotheism - between the East and West. No doubt this is an important task, but her approach in my reading is to bend over backward to excuse Muhammad of virtually any negative legacy. As such, this slants the book too much towards good intentions.

In socio-historical terms, Armstrong believes that Muhammad emerged in a culture in crisis, offering a new religious solution that first and foremost worked politically. The Arabs, she says, had developed a tribal culture, whereby relative peace was maintained by the threat of blood feud - if a tribal ... Read More

This book addresses an important topic, about which every "westerner" should know something; I looked forward to reading and digesting it. Unfortunately, although the book begins well, the reader is soon lost in a mishmash of disorganized information, apparently assembled with little or no thought given to logical structure. I would only recommend the book to someone who is prepared to construct his own outline after multiple attempts to read it.
