1.Batman : The Dark Knight Returns by: Frank Miller

Books : Batman : The Dark Knight Returns
The Dark Knight Returns is a classic piece of comic book literature that helped transition Batman from the campy character he had been turned into back to the grim and gritty protector of the streets that he was meant to be. The story depicts a Gotham City that has been without Batman for years, since Bruce Wayne has gotten old and finally put away the cape and cowl. However, a series of crime waves in the city drives Batman to return despite his age, taking on a world that has become more violent and deranged than anything he faced in his younger days.

The Dark Knight Returns deserves some major recognition for the way it renewed the character of Batman. Years later, many writers are still basing their Batman stories on the themes that Frank Miller re-introduced. Unfortunately, ... Read More

Just, wow.

The story and artwork might seem a little dated at first, but then this IS a prequel and I have no idea whether the effect was intentional but it panned out phenomenally!

Mazzucchelli's artwork adds a new dimension to Miller's already amazing skill as a storyteller who is especially adept at weaving his magic with the Dark Knight.

This was definitely worth a buy, and I'd recommend it to fans of the Dark Knight, fans of the movies and even casual browsers looking to figure out the substance behind the hype of the phenomenon that has become Batman.

Let me preface this by saying that I am a relative newcomer to DC comics. The story here is excellent in my opinion, and it made me want to buy more titles involving JLA and the characters included here. Is the art subpar, especially in the end? Yes. It looks like Frank got tired of drawing it halfway through. But the story itself is worth buying this book.

This book is absolutely insane, and I loved it!

What we have here is a Batman story free of any previous or current continuity. Writer Frank Miller is taking Batman and starting his story from scratch. (Or is he? More on that later.)

The Batman in this storyline is testosterone fueled, immature, and more than a little nutty. Miller takes him so over the top that I really and truly hope the writer is poking fun at his previous incarnations of the characters and his previous, ultraviolent works such as Sin City and 300. The fact that both Batman and most other characters in the book refer to him as "the g--d--n Batman" can only lead me to believe Miller didn't want us taking this too seriously.

However, Miller is also proving a point. We'd always heard that Batman ... Read More

I think the only real reason that I was underwhelmed by Ronin was the fact that it was Frank Miller. It's an interesting story with engaging artwork, but it didn't grip me like Dark Knight or Sin City. All in all though, it's quite good.

This is one of the only books i have ever enjoyed. I usualy hate novels, but this book was so awesome I read it in one day. From the start to the end this is truly the best book ever. It will keep you at the edge of your reading seat until it is over and then when it is over you will read it again and again, possibly until you die. I highly recommend this book for all who can handle the awesomeness.

Marvel unfortunately ruined one of the greatest graphic novels ever. "Elektra assassin" script Miller/art Sienkiewicz was an amazing ride; action, magic, cyborgs, spies, and political satire, laugh-out-loud funny and full of suspense, and with art that is as over-the-top insanely beautiful and innovative today as it was 20 years ago. I was so happy to get one of my favorites in a new hardcover version...
But...
This edition is slightly larger than the original (maybe 10%), but it looks as if it was VERY poorly scanned from the original art... The images are slightly blurry when compared to the older TPB. The other stories, with art/script by Miller are better, sharp, with good colors, but "Elektra lives again" (someone called it a "Dark Knight" version of Daredevil...) was A LOT bigger when originally released, ... I didn't have high hopes as the start of the story was not as "hard-boiled" as expected. In classic Miller style, the sinister plot twists just engaged the reader.

Frank Miller doesn't pull many punches when he writes. I use the word raw to describe his writing because honestly, there is no more appropriate word if you ask me. His characters exist and breathe unapologizingly in the world of Basin City and That Yellow Bastard is way at the top of the best Sin City books for a reason. You have a hero that doesn't have an ounce of quit in him and who's pushed beyond what's even amorally admisible. Hardigan is the type of hero everyone says they would be in a situation such as that but quite frankly, I don't think there exists someone who is as unbreakable as Hardigan. Moral dilemmas don't exist when it comes to saving a kid from a rapist but it all gets way complicated when push comes to shove comes to murder. The beauty of Sin City is that even though it's noir fiction, you can't help but believe ... Read More
