One thing the creators at Marvel are good at is creating storylines that rock. They've done it over and over. Recently they did the House of M, where Wanda created a world where mutants were accepted, ruled. Of course, like all these alternate timelines, it was fixed, only this time The Scarlett Witch created a world where mutants don't exist. Except they do. But only a small number. This takes place after the event and keeps the story going.

"X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga" is by far one of the most emotionally gripping superhero comics ever. Jean Grey is a very power-ful mutant, and when she uses her powers to it's maximum potential, her personality gets controlled by the phoenix, and this is the story of what happens.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the negative reviews here ... unless you're a Captain Britain fan, not even psylocke and rachel summers can save this graphic novel from itself. Mediocre at best and not necessary for enjoyment of the entire House of M experience ...

Jim Lee made a name for himself in the late 80's with his legendary run on Marvel's Uncanny X-Men series, so it's no surprise that when given the chance to launch a brand new X-Men series in 1991 it broke all previous sales records and was the most talked-about comics event until the "death" of Superman. The Marvel Legends: X-Men - Mutant Genesis trade paperback collects the first seven issues of that new series (Lee's entire run prior to leaving to start Image Comics).

The stories collected here are pretty decent, but aren't the best from ether Claremont or Lee. Claremont's Magneto story is probably the better of the two, as it returns Magneto to villain status in a big way. Lee's story was more dynamic, and had some of the paramilitary flavor he would use as the backbone for his Wildstorm Universe. ... Read More

5.X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills by: Chris Claremont

I bought this book because I heard it's one of the best stories ever in comic book history and boy was I disappointed. This seems like a great buy given that it is one story in one book by itself. But the best story ever? Hardly. I do not understand why something is so great just because it deals with the bible or has religious overtones. Basically a religious fanatic believes mutants are not God's creatures since they were never mentioned in the bible and because of something that happened in his past now calls for the extermination of all mutants. For those who saw X-men 2, the movie, would recall similar themes since the movie was partially based on this book. Anyway, story is very simple and there are really no twists or anything deep to think about. Yes, some of this can be paralleled with the Holocaust ... Read More

This volume of Essential X-Men begins the era of big crossovers in the X-Universe with the Mutant Massacre winding through X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants, Thor, and Power Pack. Those issues are all included here. I know some people don't like that and just want X-Men issues, but if you're sitting down to read the story, it's good to have them all in one location. I could pull out my Essential X-Factor, but there are no volumes of Essential New Mutants, Power Pack, or Thor (from this era).
This volume also adds Magneto to the roster as the head of the Mutant Academy, taking the place of Professor X. It is an interesting direction and well handled by Chris Claremont. The artwork remains supreme from John Romita, Jr. and all the others who contribute to this collection (including Barry Windsor-Smith, Walt Simonson, ... Read More

I honestly don't get the appeal of these books. Why bother making (or reading) black & white reprints of classic four-color comics...? I mean, yeah, the stories are still great and the original comics are hard to find, but a huge part of what made these comics great was the eye-popping artwork, including the bright primary colors: reading them in dull B&W is just plain wrong. Sure, the printing costs are lower, so you can get more pages for your money, but it's more pages of boring, not more pages of fun. It's really a travesty.

On the other hand, it recently occurred to me that these could be used as coloring books... Maybe you could buy a box of crayons to go along with all the artwork that the publishers ruined in this format. (Axton)

You get the first 23 issues of the Wolverine ongoing series (Vol 1), much of it written by Chris Claremont (Issues 1-8, 10). This series came out when I was in the 5th Grade, and I collected each issue as they came out. I still have most of them horded away in boards and bags in a box, but it's great to have all of the stories in one book that I'm not worried about keeping in mint or near mint condition.

The stories are some of the best Wolvie stories ever told. That sounds like a big claim, but in my opinion it's true. There's a battle with Sabretooth, a story with The Hulk (gray hulk), and some great artwork. The cover of the first issue is one of my favorite Wolvie images ever.

The only downside to the Essential Wolverine is the lack of color. But you could never get 552 pages of color Wolvie for the price ... Read More

As a fan of the X-Men and all the other X-titles, I was sorely disappointed in this graphic novel.

The beginning, which featured a baseball game with the residents of X-Mansion, was perhaps the only best thing of the entire novel. After that, it just went downhill!

The battle with the Fury just simply bored me. The Fury, to me, was simply a repackaged version of the Sentinels or Nimrod. Except this time, it's...well, computer vs. computer (Sage).

Murderworld...should have stayed buried in the past.

Blah!
