Thomas Friedman brilliantly shows how the forces of globalization have connected the world in ways never possible before. The walls, ceilings, and even floors that once separated people, societies, and countries have been flattened out. Now, a single individual has more power than any other time in history.

We must make use of all these new possibilities to succeed in a world that is more competitive and more challenging than ever before.

You have to establish a competitive advantage that differentiates you from the rest of this world. If you don't, you can't survive.

This next 50 years are the most crucial time in the history of our time. We have the opportunity to end poverty, diseases, wars, ignorance, greed, and hunger.

If we don't succeed ... Read More

Though the cover is gross, we enjoyed the author's other book Oh, Yuck so we purchased this one. These books are filled with fun and interesting information. The author has a great sense of humor and presents topics in a way that is fun to read. My child, and even adults we showed the books to, were fascintated. Books like this help make science and history interesting.

Fast Food Nation is a fine "Social Thriller" bringing you to the edge of your seat right from beginning till the end.
If "Erin Brockowich" is for P&G, then "Fast Food Nation" is for MacDonald's.Author has not spared a single stone unturned to make this book an "encyclopedia" of fast food "facts"( read evils)

Going right into the production of raw materials, beef, french fries, potato farms, cattle feeds, workers apathy, production plants overseas, rules, legalities, food poisoning etc, Author has managed to bring the complete loop or lifecycle into this 300 pages "encyclopedia".Author has to commended for the way he has presented the topic to be an interesting reading and not a dull thesis.

And as a reader , I respectfully disagree with the author on the following areas :

This book is overhyped. The "knowledge" tidbits are sometimes conflicting with each other. The book does have some common sense knowledge but there are lots of other ways to learn that information in straightforward then to go through the hard read. At the same time, the book is very thin. One could read it in a short amount of time and get the bragging rights to have read this book.

Pick your choice.

This book is a highly informative account of the entire history of the contemplation and building of the Panama Canal involving many nations across several decades. The difficulties facing any entity, private or public, considering building an Isthmus-crossing canal were unbelievable: the sheer complexity of the canal design; the volume of earth to move and the size of the structures to build; the huge and multi-dimensional labor force; the tremendous earth-moving machinery required and its effective usage; the magnitude and difficulties of coordinating all the work; the decimating impact of yellow fever and malaria on the work force; and the logistics of supplying an obscure part of the world. In addition, the political maneuverings involving the governments of France, the US, Columbia, and Panama and any number of ... Read More

Robert Wallace and H. Keith Melton wrote Spycraft: The Secret History of the CIA's Spycraft is a great book that depicts the collective historiography of the CIA's Office of Technical Service (OTS) department. I have read all of David McCullough's books since May of 2008. They are all true masterpieces. The Great Bridge, along with Truman, are stand outs - but none disappoint! I visited the Brooklyn Bridge after reading this book and actualy saw the expanse for the first time. Before it was just a bridge. After reading the book it became alive with the story of the great(and not so great)people of the times. McCullough is an artist as well as a writer.
