I heartily recommend this thorough essay. I had minor quibbles with a couple of details because of the genre in which I write, but Mr. Lukeman addresses those quibbles right in the essay. Do your research, he instructs. He outlines what to research and why, and anyone who follows that advice alone won't have to worry about if they've got it right for their specific genre. Bought this and Fairyville at the same time but I forgot about it and it just sat in my computer. Well...Fairyville itself held some big surprises for me and I wrote a review for it. Mainly - not my cupa tea. I repeat - not my cup o tea. If you like male/male, male/male/male/woman references then go for it. But if you're like me and you don't think it would be particularly titillating to see your husband "do" and "be done" by another man then I think you should skip this one.

A good historian does much more than discover and reiterate facts accurately. Granted, that is vital. But a good historian lives with his materials so that over time he gains familiarity with the people and places and events, so that he gains the insights necessary to show them to us with words that make them live. So that after reading, we not only learn history but SEE it and to a limited extent experience it. In his brief essay, David McCullough does just that. I've heard it said that some of our poorest neighborhoods in the USA live better than kings did in previous centuries. Well, you probably can't prove that. This was my first ebook download and my first reading of this author. I was very pleasantly surprised by both. I would recommend this read. It's short, very interesting, great ending.

I found this book to be a sort of "basic to the basics" type, but it is better for some people, than what my opinion reflects. Unfortunately, I've read such works as, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and so on. Plus, I am not of the younger generation, who do not know many of the basics. I would highly recommend this book for younger people. But for those of us who learned many of these lessons years ago, I'd skip it; unless you're just looking for a quick brush-up on lessons we should all know by the age of thirty-five.

I'm so glad that this book exists! All the simple and proven methods of food preservation that any of us can use and all without a freezer or complicated sterilization processes. What a joy to read about simple and natural methods that not only preserve fruits and vegetables, but that make them taste better and in many cases make them positively gourmet! Every person should grab a copy of this book whether they grow their own vegetables or not.
