Do you have children? Do you have nephews? Do you have friends with kids? Are you ok with possibly angering your neighbors? Then this is the book for you. This book is full of the kind of stuff that we all took a shot at when we were younger (only this book shows you a safer way to do it).
This book is a great way to get kids away from the TV and out into the yard. It will even show them that science (at least experimentation) can be fun.
I have done several of the projects in this book, and it brought back a lot of memories, and made some new ones. There is nothing better than a cheering 11 year old after you hurl a pumpkin down the street with a catapult.
So, get this book, pick a project, and relive your childhood (and enhance someone else's.)

I bought this book as a gift for a high school science teacher, for which many of the experiments would be great. Unfortunately, the first experiment is "Edible Undies." I would love the authors to consider a revised version.

I liked this book, it's got a lot of projects kids would be interested in doing, and they all have room for improvement. I think that's a good thing though. Instead of step by steps to a perfect polished project, you can add in your own touches and refinements.
As far as lot of the projects being stuff on the internet, that's true. You can go to any number of sites and get all grown up electronics projects for building "spy" gear. But I like books. I'm biased. I like going through them with my children and deciding which project we are going to try together.
It's not very expensive, and it's a fun book for the 8-12 set, maybe even for 12-15 year olds who are only marginally interested in electronics, or just getting started with that sort of making.
Plus, I just love books ... Read More

I got this book for my brother and looked through it before giving it to him. It's a large format, and the pictures are great. The information int he book is probably not as in-depth as would be a book less focused on the photographs, but for anyone who just wants to see the beautiful images, this is a perfect book.

I did not know for sure what to expect with this book. Turns out it's a great one for family projects. It gives a good number of great ideas for things kids CAN do, but of course it advises parental participation. It should easily spark or encourage an interest in science.

6.Longitude by: Dava Sobel

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Longitude
I bought this for my visiting grandson. We had a fine time reading it together and discussing what a great invention longitude was, how many sailors' lives it saved, and the way the inventor had to fight to get the prize offered by the government for finding a way for sailors to know their exact location. I finally know why Greenwich is the "center" of time measurement. Easy to understand and yet very comprehensive on this fundamental subject.

For three out of four sections in The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story, Richard Preston's maintains an engaging and informative story of the hunt for the dreaded filovirus. This is a category of viruses including Ebola that can be swiftly lethal to primates (like you) and unmerciful in their destructiveness. It doesn't take much effort to evoke horror from this topic, but Preston does a credible job of using that horror to teach a bit about viruses, epidemiology, and biocontainment.

Unfortunately, the fourth section degenerates into journalistic narcissism. Preston pointlessly dons a biohazard suit and enters a contaminated cave in Africa, descending into an irrational, ecotopian diatribe about how viruses are nature's way of cleansing "the human infection." This sentiment is akin to ... Read More

My husband got the first book a while back for himself, but wasn't disappointed when he found it was a better book for our kids, so I got this one just to top out my last order for free shipping. I'm glad I did.
It's as good as the first one, with a lot of simple and non-intimidating projects for the beginning maker, and a lot of them are done with things you can find around the house easily, or ask your friends for.
Like the first book, a lot of the projects have room for improvement, which I think is a great thing, it inspires people to think a little more, to mess around a bit, and see what they can come up with, and feel like they really did something themselves. My 13 yo daughter likes it a lot, and we've planned on trying some of the projects together.

Johnson set out with an admirable goal: to chronicle what he thought of as the ten most beautiful experiments of all time, and to a large degree he succeeds. He freely admits that "anyone, after reading this book, could come up with a different list", and that is expected due to the nature of the book, but i contested certian choices of his. Certianly some are example of scientific brilliance, such as Millikan's oil drop experiment, but for other, such as Galileo's, their inclusion is completley absurd.. In Galileo's, he says that Galileo singing to mark time is the beaiutiful experiment, but really, it is unlikely that gelileo sang. It is just theory of a modern reasearcher. What if he used a metronome? or a dripping pipe? any nuber of things could have marked his time. I undertstand this must be arbitrary, ... Read More

I used the 2nd edition of this book and it got me through writing my honors thesis, and now that I'm in grad school I've found it useful, as have many of my colleagues. Sometimes it really helps to work your ideas out step by step - and this technique works whether you're using print or electronic resources. I find the authors' style to be candid and refreshing, and their approach can make any scholarly writing feel more doable. And while some people (like Freston) may find this book too elementary in its approach, I will say that in my experience as an editor of my department's working papers, I have found that many good papers could be made great if there was a bit more attention paid to the seemingly simple advice in this book like properly introducing data and clearly stating your focus. This book isn't just about ... Read More
