I just picked up the hardcover edition yesterday at the bargain section of my local bookstore. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It's in chronological order of R. Crumb's work broken into chapters. Each chapter starts with a write up by him telling about what was going on in his life at that time, and how some of the drawings came to be. I find him to be a fascinating artist. He bares his soul in his work, not really caring how he appears or what people think.

Funny stuff from the 60's. It was funnier then but it still brings a laugh and smile just in the art work by Crumb. Great as a collectable or light un thought provoking read to escape reality. Good stuff!

This one's simple. The Complete is all the Crumb graphic albums through the decades, from the 60's onwards. They're brilliant, well drawn as ever and laugh aloud funny, with an edge. On form all the way through.

My favourite is this one - Vol.16 from the mid-80's, because it has The Religious Experience of Philip K. Dick blowing his mind.

But Keep On Truckin' down to the Cart and collect the lot. You know you want to.

First, I must confess I am a HUGE fan of R. Crumb. There are few things of his I DON'T love. (Okay, I'm still holding out and not buying the story where he pushes his wife's face into vomit. Even a die-hard fan has her limits.)

Next confession: I was not interested in this book at all for a long while due to it's title, which seemed to say "Emasculated Crumb Artwork." I felt it would be the rose without the thorns, the storm without the thunder.

I was wrong. Even though this is not as sexy as most of his books, it is GREAT. I just adore the strips he has about his daughter Sophie, and there are many interesting things to read and look at in this book.

Apparently Crumb's wife and her friend, the publisher, were trying to market Crumb to women with this book. Personally ... Read More

Books : The R. Crumb Handbook
R. Crumb just may well be the most honest observer of the American scene of our generation. Since the mid-60s he's been looking at us and himself and putting his findings on paper. His eye has shifted focus several times over the past 50 years: early, cute satire; greeting card stuff that frequently was too risque to make it into print; the zapped LSD-inspired hippie drawings that made him the "father of underground comix"; the sexual confessions that earned him the hatred of some feminists and got him blacklisted from libraries (see the librarian's review of this book); the social critic who deplores consumerism, agri-industry, mass media, the ratrace, and the worship of the Almighty Buck; the music afficionado who writes incredible stories about his favorite musicians and musical genre; the philosopher ... Given Crumb's countercultural weirdness and his penchant for big-bummed women, the title Odds & Ends given this collection is perfect--and surely must originate with Crumb himself!

Odds & Ends focuses largely (but not exclusively) on Crumb the "commercial" artist. Arranged more or less chronologicaly, the book reproduces cards he drew when working, in the early days, for American Greeting Cards; buttons for various causes; illustrations for grassroots community newspapers like "Winds of Change"; baby shower, wedding, and anniversary announcements; letter heads, business card illustrations, and book covers; political cartoons defending environmentalism and mocking Maggie Thatcher (she's depicted as a hen laying rotten eggs) and religious intolerance (a gorilla, thumping his chest and hooting, ... OK, I'm a Crumb fan. We ain't all, but many of us are, and I'm one of the many. Waiting For Food 3 is a beautiful collection of doodles and sketches by R. Crumb while... well, while waiting for food. This book is a collection of his restaurant placemat drawings. As R. proudly says in his intro dated July 2002, "I'm no longer simply doodling to pass the time 'til the food arrives. I'm EARNING MONEY while waiting to be served!" Good, he's having fun... he deserved it. This guy (almost) single handedly started the underground comic craze of the 60's and 70's. He started Zap Comix, writing and drawing the first two issues completely by himself. Check out crumbmuseum.com for a tribute to the Master, Robert (R) Crumb.

I saw this on the shelf at the library and grabbed it because I'm a fan of Crumbs work and share his fetish for large buttocked females. These are not any of his comic stories, this book is a compilation of some of his earliest sketches done during his childhood and teen years so most of this stuff is very innocent and cute, not the cartoon porn, neurotic angst ridden or LSD influenced art that Crumb is best known for. It was interesting to flip through the pages but I doubt this would interest anybody but the most hardcore Crumb fans or possibly art students.

The review above says this is not Crumb's best stuff, and not to buy anything from "This Publisher." This makes NO SENSE, because Fantagraphics is publishing THE COMPLETE WORKS of ROBERT CRUMB, in order, from his early years right up to the present. Crumb supervises each release and writes the introductions to each volume. Furthermore, Fantagraphics is one of the best publishers of quality comix in the world.

If you like R. Crumb, this collection is pretty much the best you can get. Unless you just want a "greatest hits" which is fine to. In any case, Volume 4 is my favorite collection, but there is quality stuff in each one. The review above is sort of akin to someone blasting the Riverside Shakespeare because it includes stuff like Pericles or The Two Noble Kinsman. It's the COMPLETE WORKS, guy! ... Read More
