Let's open by saying that if you're into comics at all, this is the first classic of the graphic novel genre, and you really need to read this book for the insights it gives into what might drive people to put on tights and fight crime, and where that choice might lead them. At the same time, this book is not for children - besides the (relatively) graphic violence and complex moral issues, there are sexual situations (no nudity, of course) that fall well beyond anything normally seen in comics. If you're a sci-fi/fantasy fan who's not really about comics, but willing to give it a chance, this review's for you.

Set in an alternate America of the 1980's, Moore paints a bleak picture of a world on the brink of nuclear holocaust, where the growing power of evil infects even the ... Read More

The Graveyard Book has been something I've been anticipating for a while, because I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman. But I am not giving this 5 stars just because I'm a fan, I'm giving it 5 stars because this is one of the best stories you can find by Neil. It will please anyone who reads it, no matter what age. The stories are all engaging, and Neil's excellent, yet subtle sense of humor is ever-present. My favorite thing Neil does is that he uses metaphors and similes and imagery that portray the most vivid description in your mind, but aren't convoluted. Everything he says is there for a reason, and Neil's ability to tell a story is among the, if not the best, of anyone around today.

This is a great purchase for anyone wanting a good Batman comic who's familiar with Batman and his journey through the years. His return sparks much interest throughout Gotham and the world and one of his friends that has fought along side him against the villians of the DC universe. The imagery is surreal and Frank Miller has outdone himself again.

The shipping was quick, and my new copies were delivered without any hassles. This is a great buy.

Beautifully colored and inked. The story is short, but a great insight into the Joker. It can be disturbing, but that is the very charm that makes this story a great read again and again.

5.V for Vendetta by: Alan Moore, David Lloyd

It's been mentioned before, but the quality of the printing for this book is pretty poor. Honestly, I wouldn't have even minded the poor paper quality if the book side had simply been increased by about 2 inches on either side, but as is, things are pretty cramped and a lot of the detail is lost. So if you're picky, be warned.

If you've seen the movie, then you know what to expect here. There are some small changes, but for the most part, the book and the movie are pretty much parallel. I'm sure you've heard that Moore whined about the movie, and I was expecting to see a lot more differences, but no. The tone is really the same, the plot is the same, Moore was being silly.

I'd say this is take or leave if you've seen the movie. But if you liked the movie and want to get a slightly ... Read More

If you are a fan on the Batman movies, the comics, or the batman mythos at all then this book is a must read. I have always been a fan of the batman series since I can remember. This book offers a great history of the caped crusader. Not only does it introduce the hero of the story but a few of the major supporting characters and how they came to be. It really shows how far gotham has fallen into corruption and crime. It is a very good read.

I have only recently started into graphic novels, but out of the ones I have read I would rate the batmans from best to least favorite as follows:

1)Dark Knight Returns
2)Long Halloween
3)Killing Joke
4)Dark Victory
5)Batman: Year One

Long Halloween has a great story (which continues in Dark Victory), great art style, and is just fun to read. Highly recommended.

I have to admit that most of my exposure to Gaiman is through the hands of other artists. In fact my introduction to Gaiman was via Dave McKean. While I did not read the printed version of "Coraline" the graphic edition caught my eye and I picked it up and found I could not put it down. Russell's visual adaptation gave me enough to establish boundaries, but left enough open visually for the head to bring the pages to life. I find interesting the genre of materials (books, movies, graphic novels, music) that are related through the eyes of children, but are best experienced by adults. "Coraline" fits this mold well. I watched Jan Svankmajer's "Little Oti" last night--I would place that in this pool as well.

This was a Christmas present from my sister-in-law last year. I completely loved Anansi Boys and was eager to tear into this one.
I must say, I really thought Anansi Boys was a better book. That isn't to say I didn't like this one, I just thought that Anansi Boys flowed better.
I really loved how he took ancient mythology and breathed new life into the old stories. I honestly found myself wishing more of the story was from the perspective of the old gods rather than the main character, Shadow. I just didn't find the main character all that engaging. I thought it was really clever plot and I love his writing style.
It reminded me a lot of another book I read years ago by the title of Shadows Fall by Simon R. Green.
Overall, a fun book that just didn't match up to Anansi Boys.
