As a physics graduate student interested in biophysics research, I found this text an invaluable resource. I had intro chemistry as an undergrad and AP bio in high school, but no organic chemistry or any other background. This text contained a clear introduction to biochemistry and described a lot of the techniques I was reading about in scientific papers in language that a non-chemist could understand. I still refer back to it frequently.

This is a big book dealing with molecular biology in considerable detail. It is organised in 24 chapters subdivided in small paragraphs each one dealing with a particular problem in molecular biology. The book covers the basics first and then deals with more specific matters like immunology, cancer, development, etc all seen from the molecular biologist point of view. Although the approach is purely mechanistic it uses a clear evolutionary orientation, well explained at the beginning of the book, that helps to give a dynamic framework to the whole subject. This is not a book to be read in only a few weeks but roughly a year's time, given the detail and amount of material exposed.

I rarely write reviews but couldn't miss the chance to champion this product. Over a year ago a natural health practitioner had told me to try a neti pot for my terrible allergies and chronic sinus problems, but I thought it was just one of those New Age fads or something. In the last few years my allergies have gotten so bad that I can only breathe through my mouth most of the time.

What does that have to do with this book? NOTHING!! Except it explains why I began to read it (an undergraduate text after all - despite having graduated from Duke with my Ph.D in Organic Chemistry in 1974).

You see, deep mental concentration will generate a headache due to sinusal constriction but shallow mental concentration (such as in reviewing a subject of which you are already a master) ... Read More

I actually just took my final for this course 10 min ago. Took this course and used this book in my junior year of college. Book was good but extremely dry. It does explain the nuts and bolts of orgo in a precise and direct manner. Chapters are pretty long averaging about 40 pages each. Within chapters there are practice problems that are very helpful, I suggest buying this with the problem solving guide, because the book only gives answers to it's questions until a certain point beyond that they require you to purchase the problem solving guide. There are many pictures and figures to help you understand the material better.

This book delves into the kind of information that could help us avoid making the same mistakes over and over. If it can help create awareness of how susceptible the public is to being flim-flammed by the Oil Industry experts and its sycophants imbedded throughout the government and media we could clean this mess up. The book shows that it was the oil interests who politicized energy not the author of this book.

Contrary to the specious complaints of some, this book doesn't pretend to be a "How To" book on making alcohol out of fruit... which is plain from a quick look at the table of contents. Try a brewers store. Besides it is illegal to make alcohol in any useful quantities without an expensive license...ever heard of the ATF? ...good grief

I teach general chemistry as both a private tutor and as a free tutor at Purdue University. In my time, I've seen every general chemistry book known to man come across the table. Without fail, though, BLB is my reference text. Like many gen chem books it has excellent diagrams, but in addition the text is lucid, organized, well written and makes no pedagogical leaps that the reader must figure out on their own. It is easy to read and easy to understand and the material is presented in a fairly logical order (I have minor quibbles with some of it). I forsee this book becoming a classic in the future.

I am in a first semester Organic Chem class. My teacher does not like this book, but it is required at the university (due to a recent switch from Wade). I purchased it along with the solutions manual and to tell you the truth, this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever used (after taking multiple Engineering courses in math, physics, chemistry, biology, biomechanics, etc). It touches on everything without ever testing the reader on it. For example, in introducing the conformations of alkanes, it never asks the reader to explain anything through Newman projections. Well, given that my lecture consisted of two lectures doing this to explain cyclohexane/pentane conformations, I'd say this is fairly important (this is not just my class, either, this seems to be the trend). Regardless, the problems are absolutely ... Read More

I don't know what the other peoples problems are with this book, but it is great, and the online addition was very helpful. I learned chemistry from this book without going to class, and I pulled an A in the class. It teaches you the concepts very easily, and shows step-wise procedures in how to answer problems, and not just in a way that limits your ability to solve, but in a manner that promotes general understanding for how to solve a bunch of problems. Great Book, highly recommended.
