Great book chosen/read for a book club (of all white women) I read this over a 4-day holiday and it brought me to tears a few times. It's emotional and historical, modern and joyful. I didn't feel the references to religion were so overt that someone like me (a non-practicing Catholic) was inundated to feel a certain way. I can relate to some of the books spiritual moments (from my own life) and it's interesting to see how they're written.

My personal take away is a better understanding of the homeless persona; how my volunteering in those environments may be mis/construed and received by the other parties. I think this would be a decent book for young adults preparing to volunteer as well as ALL of us and friendship. We're so superficial anymore, finding and keeping friends ... Read More

Richard Dawkins is a modern day "Ebenezer Scrooge" who can't even admit that people sometimes operate from altruistic motives. Why? Because it would actually show that over 3,700 years of moral discourse (much of it, certainly not all, as a result of beliefs about God) have had some effect. Perhaps this is why even the great philosopher Emmanuel Kant was unwilling to dismiss the idea of God from the scheme of things. Maybe Dawkins should go back and read Kant and see why many educated people believe that humanity's "moral impulse" gives credence to a belief in God. Pointing out the past and current shortcomings of organized religion is certainly valid, but as 95 percent of humnity believes in God in some form, to simply label this belief as a delusion is ludicrous.

"the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do" -1Ch12

To this concise book by Bishop Chaput, this non-Catholic says: Wow, a true tour d'force. A continuous flow of historical, cultural, moral, and spiritual insight and perspective.

At times the text flows almost non-stop with memorable quotes, representing an enormous amount of research, imparting a deep well of understanding and wisdom.

I liked the way Chaput didn't gloss over the church's difficulties in implementing the Vatican II changes, or indeed, the need for those changes prior to that council. I think this was a very honest and perceptive presentation of the challenges facing, not only Catholics, though the book was certainly geared primarily to them, but all Christians, ... Read More

No lengthy treatise on this book - that's already been done. Very simply - Mighty good book, which is no surprise seeing that's it Norris - and on a much-ignored and forgotten topic. Read it - it's eye opening.

I found the book to be quite interesting, with a lot of insight. My experience with young adults demonstrates that they do find Evangelical Christians first and foremost anti-gay, judgmental, hypocritical, and too political. I would argue that the perceptions of the last three points are a direct result of the first one (anti-gay). The recent Proposition 8 in California highlighted all four of these findings - the Proposition was a political effort directed at taking away the rights of gay people, in the guise of "defending marriage". But, divorce is the biggest violation of marriage, is explicitly condemned by Jesus (he doesn't discuss homosexuality), and it is a much more significant issue than homosexuality when the actual numbers of people impacted are examined. Much research shows that born-again Christians (specifically Evangelicals) ... Read More

This will increase your belief in God if you already believe in God. If you are unsure of where you will be spending Eternal Life and if the Bible is real then this is proof. The evidence is presented is a great way and can not be disputed. I am a Christian, but it gets tougher to defend our Faith, the Bible, and God. We face so many challenges today that this is a suit of armor to complement reading the Bible and going to church.

I agree with the 1 star reviewers. This was no scholarly work. It wasn't nearly enough pages long. He didn't even use long words. If he was really an intellectual don't you think he would have used longer words?

Besides the fact that Hitchens's premise equates his BELIEF in a non-existent "God" with religion -- which is far from the truth (G*d is not religious, what a radical idea!) -- his writing is far too pseudo-intellectually written in faux Old English, circa 1700. Very, very difficult to read. You'll have to read every sentence 3 or 4 or 5 times. (And yet, I have a post-graduate degree.) His thoughts are all over the place. He refers to things like "it," or "the book," or "that" and we have no idea to what he is referring without careful study and rereading.

He gets his facts wrong as well. For example, jumping to page 113 (just bad luck, I guess), he refers to "Barbelo" in the Nag Hammadi Library as "a heavenly destination, a motherland beyond the stars," whereas it is correctly defined as a non-visible, feminine intermediary ASPECT ... Read More

I have read several Buddhist books, and listened to countless Dharma talks, and yet I have learned things in this book that I had never heard of. For example, Buddhist texts on Lucid dreaming, past life visions, Buddhist personality types, and thoughts on the unconscious. While not all of this is relevant to me at this point, it was interesting. The book has great wisdom throughout. Maybe a little too much on the stories, that's why I didn't give 5 stars.

A disapointing book. Instead of explaining how this totally new type of international political party - because that is precisely what the Bilderberg and the Trilateral Commission are - came into being, and what are its policies, how are they implemented throughout the world, the author offers a sequence of very unconvincing and very low quality spy stories that look like pure fiction and certainly do not support any of his "arguments". And the rest of the narrative is mostly direct or hidden quotes from elsewhere. OK, the author and his helpers managed to catch a few glimpses and bits of conversations at highly secretive meetings of the leadership of a political party - so what? None of them is any substantial proof of any sophisticated conspiracy; it would be ridiculous to claim that they are. The "top secret" questions and comments by Bilderbergers that the author ...
