Got a lot of good insights in the book. As with many such books, it's better at critiquing the current state of affairs than it is at offering an alternative. I found the critique to be very helpful; although my tendencies in favor of primitive Christianity may have biased me. I like the critique of the institution of the clergy and of the idolatry surrounding church buildings. As for its weaker "how we should really do church" side; the book fails to distinguish the basic nuances and tension between whether the New Testament is talking about the early church in descriptive or prescriptive terms. I have never written a review on a book before. But this book has me feeling so enlightened I felt I needed to share. I've never had a book make me think and rethink everything I've ever learned about history. THis book is a MUST READ for everyone, not just in America, but the entire world. Marrs sites authors, controversial and not, leaving his personal opinion on the backburner. This book pulls together our present view of history and religion, states it as we know it, then proves through historical texts, that it's all wrong. If you are looking for the best book on expository preaching...YOU FOUND IT!! This was a required textbook for one of my seminary classes, and I absolutely loved reading it. No other book that I have read so far and I've read quite a few about preaching, really explains the "HOW-TO" of expository preaching! I highly recommend this book to all pastors, teachers and laymen.

This book was very difficult to read because it doesn't use contemporary colloquial English. According to critics and scholars, E. Allison Peers did an outstanding job translating this work. Without a doubt: it is so (I assume.) According to me, I need a translator to translate this translation into a work that I can understand easily. I blame my lack of education for my troubles reading and understanding this book, of course. However, to those people out there with just a basic education, like me, be warned: reading this book will be an arduous effort. A very difficult effort indeed. I teach theology. In my experience, the large, green, second edition is worth buying even if you have another edition. It alone contains a glossary of terms that richly pulls together many pages of text into 20 words to give a deep, complete understanding at a quick glance. If you intend to use the book more than two or three times a month, I strongly recommend the hard cover edition because the paperback binding begins to fail under frequent usage. Peace be with you! This book is awesome! It is so easy to understand and really explains the mass. It gives history of the mass, the "why" of traditions,and the "how" to really encounter Christ in the mass. This is a must read for all Catholics and converts. I am so glad I made this purchase...well worth the money.

As is usual with Scott Hahn, we "cradle Catholics" benefit from his "new eyes" when taking a closeer look at who we are as Catholics and why we do what we have been doing for, well, 2,000 years. This book was very enjoyable. It made many things "click" and I recommend it to any Catholic looking for ways to enrich their communion in Christ and the Church.

This book is amazing... It's painful to imagine ANYONE i love ending up there! God has so freely given us the chance to repent and be SAVED from this... This book has challenged me to TELL OTHERS of the FREE GIFT of Salvation and to avoid the pit of burning torture described by Mary Baxter! A MUST READ in my opinion!!!
