I cannot believe I haven't heard about this book before, and cannot put it down. Easy reading, not too technical, very good examples of various experiments, and drawing from 'ancient' knowledge as well as finding very pertinent references to the "Field" from people from various walks of life over the last century - how come they 'knew' about this and so many of us are disconnected? Wonderful reading.

For the animals covered, this books gives a surprising amount of detail about possible meanings of animal symbolism relevant to working with images in my dreams and meditations. I didn't find as much available for fish and reptiles, more for birds and mammals. The author's perspective seems to be respectful of each animal and the wisdom of the reader. It does not attempt to be a cookbook of "hard and fast" analytic interpretations. Instead it offers helpful suggestions drawn from the animals' role and behavior in the wild, as well as symbolic meanings from a mythic or cultural viewpoints. Fun to read...cover to cover.

This is an excellent book and if you are drawn to it just get it. I hadn't read anything by Melchiezedek before but I am now a big fan and will read his other work asap. I have several friends now looking for this book of me but all at the same time!! I don't normally review books but wanted to help this book get out there. Enjoy

This book is just simply wonderful. Scott Cunningham was a truly wonderful man and fellow Wiccan, no matter if you are new to Wicca or have been practicing for many years, this and all of his books are a must!!! )O(

You'll really have to adjust your approach to and expectations for reading when you take up this book. It's not intended to answer your questions or give you a history of Celtic culture. It's really more of a prose poem, meant to support reflection and even meditation. It's postmodern in the sense that it centers on the concept of our deepest desires, but I wouldn't call it New Age as some other reviewers have. Just because something makes connections between traditions from various cultures and times doesn't make it New Age. If you let yourself share in O'Donohue's sense of wonder that similar wisdom arose in places removed from each other in space and time, you will discover the heart of the book.

The ESV seems to be a very accurate translation. It does not always read like contemporary English, but sometimes that's an advantage because it makes one stop and think about what one is reading. I really appreciate the way Crossway has some beautiful covers for these Bibles. I'd gotten tired of black and burgundy!
