"the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do" -1Ch12

To this concise book by Bishop Chaput, this non-Catholic says: Wow, a true tour d'force. A continuous flow of historical, cultural, moral, and spiritual insight and perspective.

At times the text flows almost non-stop with memorable quotes, representing an enormous amount of research, imparting a deep well of understanding and wisdom.

I liked the way Chaput didn't gloss over the church's difficulties in implementing the Vatican II changes, or indeed, the need for those changes prior to that council. I think this was a very honest and perceptive presentation of the challenges facing, not only Catholics, though the book was certainly geared primarily to ... Read More

This book describes many of Michelangelo's high Renaissance artworks in the Vatican City, Florence and elsewhere and claims Michelangelo was directly influenced by Jewish religious teachings of the Talmud, Midrash and Kabbalah in his subject matter as well as deeper symbolic messages of Christian religious art, particularly in the Sistine Chapel.

The authors note that Michelangelo was virtually adopted by Lorenzo de Medici and educated in an intellectual environment of the de Medici court that included Renaissance scholars and philosophers who were proponents of ideals of unity of religious and philosophical thought. Among other sources, the authors claim these studies included Jewish teachings and philosophical works based on Jewish teachings. The authors argue that the Jewish component ... Read More

This is a well-written and insightful book about the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is not an easy read in that it is not for entertainment but rather it is a study of a period of time during Jesus' time on earth. I am not a Catholic so I did not have any idea as to the Pope's qualification as a theologian. Obviously, he is very qualified. I am a more informed Christian for having read this book.

This book is terrible at all levels and not useful for any purpose. It's a horribly dull read, without any true narrative, and is so heavily edited as to be useless even for historical purposes. This book is little more than a selective collection, tied together by heavy editorial remark, of professional correspondence between Mother Teresa and her supervisors. I was led to believe by the hype preceding this book that it would 1) reveal Mother There's personal struggles with the existence of God, and 2) be a raw glimpse of Mother Teresa's personal writings... this book is dissatisfying on both counts, and fails miserably all around. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS MISERABLE LITTLE BOOK.

6.Being Catholic Now: Prominent Americans Talk About Change in the Church and the Quest for Meaning by: Kerry Kennedy

As a Catholic, I've grown tired of relentless monotone stereotyping of Catholics. Being Catholic Now has been needed for a long time. Kennedy brings a more honest look at the rich spectrum of Catholic experience. The book affirmed that my experience growing up Catholic, thoughtful, curious, open, and responsible (not guilty) was not an anomaly as so many would suggest. In fact, my experience seems normal. What a joy!

I agree with the Customer Reviews, especially the comment "Fr. Pacwa respects the intelligence of his readers, and doesn't hesitate to introduce deep theological points and insights".
However, we have a Bible Study Group that is finding Father Pacwa's book to be difficult. In my opinion, before tackling Father Pacwa's Bible Study, our Bible-Study Group would have benefitted from a more chronological study of St Paul's life and his letters FIRST. (Bible-Study is not new to our group--our group has been meeting for 2 years.)
In my opinion, in order for a group to really comprehend the SOLID FOOD that Fr Pacwa introduces via St Paul's Scriptural passages, it might make better sense to really understand the MILK first.

I first read this book when given to me by our pediatrician. I was deeply touched by the way in which Nouwen guides us to a deepr look into the painting and ourselves. As the leader for the Sunday Adult Book Study I chose this book to start off our fall classes. It is a delight to share this book with the members of our study group, and to see the light shining within them as the true meaning of the parable sinks in. This is a book that you will want to purchase for yourself, not borrow from a friend or library, as you will want to return to it many times throughout your life as you move through the stages of prodigal, elder son and father yourself.

After using the Irish Sacred Space meditations on line, this book, SACRED SPACE, The Prayer Book 2009, enables me to enter into Jesuit-centered prayerfulness at the same time each day. The Gospel scenario is presented, followed by thoughts that I can personalize for my day. I wish I had known about these books before this year.
