After reading the first page I knew that the critics would be swarming. The fresh approach to the dilemma of pain and the revolutionary way of presenting God as present with us, was an invitation to those who desire to reduce God to the dimensions of our physical reality and traditional understanding to join the critics. So be it!

I am a theologian, or so my certificates tell me, yet I share a disillusionment with the context we have created for God in the church of today and suspect that He is far greater than our concepts, than our clearly defined theology and than our understand can accomodate.

I personally drew great pleasure from this book, and while acknowledging that it is a work of fiction and that it did not pretend to be a premmer on theological accuracy, ... Read More

I was a divorce attorney for 5 or 6 years and saw hundreds of marriages come to an end--but usually for the same few reasons. This book could put divorce attorneys out of business.

Unlike many others I came to this book without reading GILEAD first and I came to it as an audiobook, so I couldn't speed read past passages that bothered me. Oftentimes, the ability to do that will make a so so book really work for me. That said, I thought this book was a bit preachy, at least the Rev. Boughten was, but I guess I should have expected that.

What I didn't expect was how hard it was for the old man to connect with his son. Wow, forgiveness is hard for the religious. Actually, that's something I've observed in my life, those who call themselves Saved seem to have little use for those they call secular. Forgiveness doesn't seem to be a part of their vocabulary.

Back to the book. I did like the story, even though the relationships seemed a bit to strained to be ... Read More

)"Sunset" is a beautifully written novel by an incredible author. Karen Kingsbury brings the Baxter Family saga to a close in this fourth novel in the series. Although it is sad to say goodbye to these beloved characters, I have read that they will make up part of the background cast in another of Kingsbury's book serieses. In this novel, Dayne and Katy are building their family - not without complications. John Baxter is moving on with his life after the death of his beloved wife - again, not without complications.

This novel reads okay as a standalone, but is so much better if you are already invested in the characters from previous stories in this series. There are some wonderful discussion questions in the back of the book for the reader to ponder or share with a reading group. ... Read More

The atheist's position has always seemed a curious one, since by definition it involves proving a negative. All good theologians from Tertullian to Ruhollah Khomeiny will happily tell you they have no idea what they mean when they use the word "God." So it's as if you're given a Navaho word, let's say "Dzihl," without being told what it means. The atheist then says, "Dzihl definitely doesn't exist. I say this with certainty, despite the fact that I have no idea what Dzihl is."
To argue that God doesn't exist because we can explain the Universe without Him seems equally curious. We can explain European history satisfactorily without reference to Beethoven's music. Beethoven's music nevertheless exists.
Dawkins' book is not going to convince, or even sway, one single person. He must know this: so what is it in fact ... Read More

The author spent a considerable number of years living in an isolated small South Dakota home, and began frequenting monasteries for intellectual stimulation - hardly a good foundation for a vigorous intellectual life. Much stronger alternatives included moving to a larger city or becoming employed as a high-school or junior college instructor, heavy use of the Internet (reading respected sources such as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, and posting her own thoughts), and use of satellite TV.
