In reading "The Prodigal God" by Dr. Timothy Keller, I was repeatedly struck with the notion of how important this work is for the life of the church right now. The passage in Luke 15 that it is based on has been misunderstood and misapplied by preachers and readers in the West for several centuries. While there is a great deal of comfort available to us from the notion that the outwardly reckless younger brother, often known as the Prodigal son, there is much, much to be learned from the other two main characters in the parable.

It is the father that lavishes an extravagant love and a forgiveness upon BOTH brothers, who BOTH need his love. It is the elder brother who also needs to repent of his own set of sins which are just as heinous. The elder brother is just as lost as the ... Read More

If you are not inspired to live like Jesus over and above living like an American after reading this book, you either completely missed the point or have some serious issues with syncretism to work out.

That said, Rob Bell paints a beautiful, poetic manifesto (for all the reviewers complaining about how 'short' the book was, perhaps a healthy understanding of expectations coming in would have been worthwhile) that far surpasses even his brilliant 'Velvet Elvis'. Bell says so much in so few words, cutting through the heady theology and allowing Jesus to pierce the heart of His followers to wake up and 'get it'.

Bell's book is framed around the idea that Jesus is not only saving the world,

but saving US.

You and me.

In America.

I downloaded a sample of this book on to my kindle and found myself laughing out loud the first couple chapters. So, I went ahead and bought the book. The problem was it just wasn't that great. The author is funny and clever, but the book was a whole lot of the same thing throughout. I got bored halfway. I found myself skimming for a while until I got to the part where he lives the new testament, only to be dissatisfied. He basically skips over the new testament. Cute book, but too long and a lot of fluff, not much meat.

100 Ways to Simplify Your Life by Joyce Meyer is Meyer's newest entry to help Christians find their way. Each of the 100 chapters are short, just a page or so, and easy reading. They are headed by a quote from a usually secular source followed by a verse from Scripture applying to the topic. From cutting down on clutter to throwing away junk mail to saying no to excessive responsibilities, the advice in this book has been given before. There's not a lot new in Meyer's advice, but by combining it with Scripture and personal anecdote, she gives even trifling things a Biblical basis.Meyer speaks with profound confidence on every matter. If you read a lot of self-help books, this won't be of much help, but if you've never picked up one before, this may just be the one to get you jumpstarted on simplifying your life. ... Read More

This book is the best book I've read in a long time. It is literary bread and water: fleshy with life, sustaining and fulfilling, yet clean and unadorned and quenching. It is the story of the life of Woman, told through the life of one woman. At times we see through the eyes of a girl-child, observing so many new details with a slow hand, and this first part of the book is luxurious and comfortable. Then you are suddenly a woman speeding through painful, empty years, and then finally savoring the last slow memories of the sweet years before death. Dinah, the woman, is a character mentioned in the Bible, though in that text her story is short and black and white. This telling is anything but. A multitude of characters with unfamiliar names is handled with grace and genius, even after asking myself "Why can ... Read More

This is a well-written and insightful book about the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is not an easy read in that it is not for entertainment but rather it is a study of a period of time during Jesus' time on earth. I am not a Catholic so I did not have any idea as to the Pope's qualification as a theologian. Obviously, he is very qualified. I am a more informed Christian for having read this book.

The Old Testament is chiefly of interest for its unique and reliable documentary record of Bronze Age tribal origins. A case in point is the story of how God created the Ammonites and the Moabites: these two tribes, adversaries of the Hebrew people, descended from Abraham's nephew, Lot -- whose two naughty daughters kept their innocent father drunk in a cave, and had sex with him until both gals became pregnant, and gave birth to Abraham's grand-nephews, Ammon and Moab (Gen. 19:30-38).

The holy Ghost didn't just make that story up, it really happened! And you should hear the stories, told by the Ammonites and Moabites, about how the HEBREWS got started! ... er, I mean, no you should NOT hear them, because they're not true! Which is why God mostly omitted from the Bible that X-rated story narrating ... Read More
