One of my great pleasures is listening to "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" on NPR each week. Many of the panelists and guests are very clever and funny, but Roy Blount Jr. adds a deep gravitas to his humorous contributions. Much of that gravitas comes from his deep baritone with its foundation of Georgian drawl, over lain with vowels sometimes clipped off with a sharp Boston twang. I wonder if listening to himself led Blount to his theory of "sonicky", that the sound of a word often evokes its meaning. Search on his made up word in Amazon's extremely generous extracts and see if you don't agree; "chunky" and "wonky" are two excellent examples, but the book contains many others. I bought this book many years ago when our youngest who is now 19 was 3 or 4. It is the typical modern psycho-babble about trying to understand your kids etc. Useless trash. You are much better off going with John Rosemond's "Six Point Plan to Raising Happy Healthy Children". Much more effective tools and practical. We have 7 children and Rosemond's books were very helpful. If I would have tried to follow the advise in this book, I would have had a nervous breakdown by now.

It was wonderful to read these great speeches by great people. The book is something to be cherised by all. It was easy reading and the price is right. I will probably purchase more of this book to give to friends and family. Barack Obama is the man of the year, so everyone wants to read his speech.

I read this book as an assignment for a communication class. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it was not only easy to read but, it provided valuable insight to what goes wrong during the communication process and how one can begin to steer the process back in a productive direction. After reading this book, I was able to use the practical applications to many different conversations i.e. personal and professional relationships. It is a truly valuable tool if you have ever left a conversation feeling that you could have done more. I will be purchasing the authors' other books.

Steven Pinker is one of the greatest minds we have. The Blank Slate is on my top 20 lifetime list for books and I've enjoyed seeing him in interviews (and one outstanding debate) online. The Stuff of Thought unfortunately is fairly pedestrian by his standards. To me, this book was far more about language than it was human nature or psychology. As far as linguistics is concerned readers learn much but the same cannot be said in terms of it providing a window into our souls. Some of the wordplay was entertaining and he is insightful concerning speech but not enough psychology was illuminated here in my view to warrant opening it again.
