For someone who knew nothing of outdoor, independant living, I walked away from this book a wealthy, knowledgeable person after having read it. In a nutshell, please buy this book FIRST! You will find that after buying this book that you will need very few other books out in the market. This author addresses everything you need to know about various topics of outdoor, independant living, and if she doesn't have all the answers, she forwards you to other sources that will get you the specific info you need. This book is worth the money. I bought it to learn more about gardening, and came away learning so much more. This is a book that one MUST purchase as a staple in their book collection.

Larousse Gastronomique I purchased this book for a friend who was offered a job as an executive chef at a country club. I was told by many it is the bible for all chefs. I paged through it and it's amazing. I am not a chef, but I cook a lot. I will be buying one of these for myself! As far as the friend, he was pleasantly surprised to say the least by his going away/congrats gift! It is a must have.

As a studying Sommelier, I find this book lays the foundation for food and wine harmony. It is a wonderful reference and will be helpful for all levels of wine education. Cheers!

I was pleasantly surprised at how in depth yet very easy to read this encyclopedia is. I was a little hesitant at first, but now I'm really glad that I made this purchase!

This book indeed does what its title promises-- it's a fairly comprehensive review of whole foods. It tells you how to select each type of food (veggies etc), and incorporates some useful information from ayurvedic tradition and chinese medicine. However, it only has a few recipes. In many cases, you close the book feeling educated on a certain food but still have no idea how to eat it. The other problem I have with it is that sometimes it comes off as alarmist (i.e., don't use re-boiled water when making tea because it has lost its optimal oxygen). A good reference book but I wouldn't run my life by it.

I purchased this book recently. It is very large and will not fit on many book shelves. Includes a great variety of recipes including many that you would probably classify as italian, german, or of other origin. Attractive pictures, and a large number of pages devoted to the history of cooking in Louisiana. I would not call it exhaustive, but it has a nice variety of recipes. I have only tried making the gumbo so far and would say that I prefer the recipe in Paul Prudhome's Louisiana Kitchen. If you could only buy one book, I would recommend the Prudhome cookbook over this one. I found the Prudhome recipies more appealing and the book is much less costly.

It's a great book for learning what foods can benefit you in personal ways that you, or friends and family may need, or just want! It covers a variety of health issues, and is a very informative and educational book! I love it! I'd recommend it to anyone who likes bettering their health, in delicious ways. It also offers alot of recipes too!

I am just getting into solar cooking and we made a solar cooker. Great fun. Now that autumn is almost here, I probably won't be using it as much. This book has lots of recipes and helps you to see that almost any recipe can be used in a solar oven. I feel great when I don't turn on my oven and save energy.

I value the Oxford Companion as a wide-ranging resource although it's very scope allows for general rather than specific accounts of the many food items it covers. Nevertheless, it is great to have at hand and it does come with comprehensive bibliographical information for those wishing to look at topics in more detail.
