After reading so many positive reviews for this book, I was deeply disappointed by the content and writing style. The four-word sentences and atrocious punctuation were torture for me. The author may have wanted the memoir to be from a child's perspective but the childish writing style was simply too much to bear. And this from a professional writer? Easily eighty percent of the commas could have been deleted from this book with only beneficial results. Also I found the book to be completely incredible. Walls describes in detail lighting herself on fire by cooking hotdogs as a three year-old. This book A Child Called It is a inspiration to many people. I think that this story about this young boy might inspire you to try to make it through if you have had some hard times in your life. This book is not fiction this is a true story the boys name is Dave Pelzer he is the author of the book and the boy is Dave. Dave was abused by his mother earlier in his life badly his father tried to help but he couldn't do much. Its very inspiring and I think it would also be inspiring to you. There are two sequels that go along with this book.

Oh how I felt for this child. My heart was torn in two. Child abuse just astounds me. How does it happen. And then the ignorance of the legal system! The school dragging their feet along, knowing something was wrong. I cried through this book.

If there is any lingering hurt between you and your parents or you and your children, this book is worth reading. Even young people can relate well to it's concepts (yup - that's me! pointed out my son - and we're from a pretty close family). I have sent it to many teens and twenty-somethings, but even my 40 & 50 something friends have found some wisdom and comfort in knowing that "it wasn't just them" or "oh my g..! I did that too!" Knowledge is power and choice - once we have a better understanding about where our "hurts" are originating from, we can change those thought patterns and maybe even find the courage to talk to the ones we have hurt or have hurt us. Easy, fast and can be read in parts.

This book helped me through a very turbulent time. It addresses many issues that are simply common sense, but seeing them in print is very justifying. I ordered a used book as it was cheaper and I don't like to keep books after I read them. This book came in the condition that was described. The shipment came in a very timely manner, and I loved the book.

I have to admit that his books are compelling but I didn't think they were convincing. There were a lot of unanswered questions and non enough substantial information to make it real to me.

I highly recommend this book anyone who has experienced - depression, guilt, grief, abandonment, abuse or addiction. Healing the Shame - points to the build up of - Undeserved Shame as Children - as the main reason for the emotional pain we're haunted by through out our lives - pain we are destined to relive if not faced. While Part One of this book expresses and pin points the Problem, Part Two is devoted to Solutions. I am not rating this book on miniscule literary flaws, its far to important of a message to care. Bradshaw's collection of different ideas and methods by other authors and thinkers on the issue shows his passionate search to understanding Shame as well as that he takes a realistic stance that there is no pill formed method for how we face and resolve our past. The book has a good idea behind it. And it makes some good points. But I found it much more difficult to read that many other books of this type. Not "hard" difficult or anything like that. Difficult in the sense that the book just never caught my attention the way that other self help books have and I really had to force myself to keep reading. I don't think I got as much out of it as I could have simply because I had such a hard time paying attention.
