This is an excellent book which stands out amongst true crime books as one of the best. The author handles a gruesome topic without making the reader feel depressed. Every aspect of the crime is examined while the writer illuminates an historical perspective which is fascinating.

While not as enjoyable as Krakauer's other works, UTBOH is a compelling read. Insightful, giving the outsider a view of the FLDS church that is seldom seen and even less understood. Some of the passages are disturbing and violent. The book sometimes has a feel of anti-religious propaganda, but give credit to Krakauer for being someone who attempts to deliver the facts as best he can. I am sure this was a very difficult book to research due to the "closed" nature of the society he was investigating. Great read for those interested in the topic. The casual reader, however, will be lost in the confusing morass that is the FLDS church.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. So what can we learn from an examination of three U.S. presidential assassinations -- those of Abraham Lincoln, and Presidents Garfield and McKinley? A lot if our guide is Sarah Vowell.
Written in a breezy, entertaining way, this book is nonetheless quite serious. Vowell takes us on a trip through history and also across present-day America, exploring the paths of the men who snuffed out the lives of these presidents, everywhere making incisive and insightful connections. Tying these three presidential victims together is the frustrated and unheroic figure of Robert Todd Lincoln, the dead president's son, who lived into the 1920s, was president of the Pullman Company and Secretary of War and who seemed to show up on the scene whenever a president ... Over the years, I've read all of Ann Rule's true crime books, and usually look forward to the release of her new books. I special-ordered this one from a local privately-owned bookstore (it's good to keep money flowing locally!) and picked it up yesterday. Didn't have time to start reading it until after 10pm, right about when I usually watch the news and then go to sleep. Well, once I started to read it, I was riveted...couldn't put it down. Notably, I don't remember ever being so totally full of fear all the way through a book. Uncut, unadulterated...pure fear.

Though I fell asleep about halfway through, and fortunately did not dream about any of the cases Ann covers in "Mortal Danger", I simply had to finish reading it shortly after sunrise when I awoke.

So scary that neighbors, ... Read More

Non fiction book about Ron Williamson, who was wrongly convicted of murdering a young woman in the 80s. The book also includes the stories of Dennis Fritz, implicated in the same murder, and a couple other people who faced similar charges while being innocent. Ron narrowly escaped the death penalty. This is a gripping story for anyone interested in the death penalty etc. Ron is an unlikely hero with severe psychological, drinking and drug issues. However his story and what happened to him is so unbelievable that you have to read it to believe it. This book really makes you think about the justice system and how people with a certain degree of authority and a personal agenda can destroy the lives of so many for no valid reason.

My heart goes out the Goldman family. The Goldman's prelude to the book helped me to understand what they had been going through. Their story should have been more publicized. Ron was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I have read several books by different people, from Faye Resnick to Mark Furman. Nicole was no saint but she did not deserve to die so brutally. After reading what O. J. Simpson wrote, it confirmed what I had thought all along. He is a Narcissist and a Sociopath and he is guilty of this horrible double homicide. It is a shame that he got away with this.

This book goes back and forth too much and is too hard to keep up with the characters and their comings and goings. I wouldn't recommended it but to a person who can keep up with all the things going on at one time. I want a book that's not necessarily easy reading but one that is organized.

This book is essentially a detailed and well-crafted piece of journalism with the level and quality of detail to bring it into horrific focus. One gets access to all sides of the murders of a family from the effect on the close relatives and friends to the emotional states of the murderers themselves and their final demise at the end of a rope. No one can escape this book without a large emotional wallop that will leave one's mind reverberating for some time. The book additionally invites questions concerning the limits and boundaries of journalistic integrity. When does the journalist step beyond his role as observer and become part of the story? And...Should the journalist do so and thus change outcomes? Disturbingly provocative in many ways.

Books : Without Conscience: Without Conscience
This book is extremely helpful and useful, especially if you've had an encounter with a psychopath but were not aware of it at the time. The neighbor who lives behind me is clearly a psychopath and this book helped me to deal with her bizarre antics and most unusual behavior. It answered so many questions I can't thank the author enough. I've learned so much about this subject, I wish everyone would read this book and learn the things they should know before they have a devastating experience of their own.
