For anyone out there wondering who the real Barack Obama is, "The Audacity of Hope" will give you one clear idea. It is part memoir, part political manifesto, encompassing his comprehensive vision for America. The book reveals him to be very smart, well read, compassionate, and sometimes quite funny. I think few people reading the book will agree with him on every policy issue, and no one is really prepared to take on the problems facing our country. But, reading this book gave me faith that the American people have elected a very capable public servant.

Chapters are essays arranged around a single theme (eg "Faith" "Family") and some are better than others. I particularly liked what he had to say about his conversion to Christianity and some of the values he learned being raised ... Read More

I have rarely been so privileged to read a book such as DREAMS OF MY FATHER. Obama reveals his thought processes as he struggled to find his place in the larger sicial fabric. Were that all, this would not be so great a book. But, he describes his maturation in thinking as he interacted and learned from others. And, while personally growng, he was able to empathize with others from virtually all walks of life, to relate to them and to abstract the essence of their needs and being. Finally, he was able to integrate those observations into a larger vision of society and how to effect it in a positive way. All of this is written in the most compelling language. He is a great and poetic writer.

Books : Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
This book should be on the "must read" list for anyone who is either in a position of leadership, or would like to be. Having read this book I could completely understand how people make it their life's work, being a Lincoln scholar. While many have written of Lincoln, this author gives equal coverage to those critical to the success of his efforts, those who were so assured that they would be the presidencial nominee, that they did not even attend the convention. To learn how to work effectively with those who we may not necessarily like, is a lesson this country could stand to learn...quickly!

While I agree with some of the renewable energy issue, as an American, I have little trust of an individual that sees taking our personal liberties away for a day, see China for a Day chapter. This in an effort to "protect us" from ourselves. The last thing I need is the government, who can't even balance their own check book, tell me how to live or take my freedoms away for a day so they can push some agenda. While I'm not comparing the two, facisim starts with such beliefs. I'd read this book with a helpful spoon full of concern. Interesting book but not worth the read.

This is a tale about a remarkable man - unfortunately it is not very well written. Even tho the action takes place in different towns, it is basically the same story over and over. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in building schools for the poor in Pakistan and also as an aid to sleeplessness.

As the book jacket of A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity says, "this time it's personal." Bill O'Reilly, the man so many folks love to hate (please don't get Barney Frank started), this time around explains how he came to be the man he is. While it is doubtful that his detractors will read the book, those who admire O'Reilly, or at the least find him to be entertaining, will probably enjoy this one.

Bill O'Reilly, born in 1949, seems to have always been a bit of a rebel despite his upbringing by Depression era parents. Many of his core beliefs, such as spending wisely and saving for the future, come from that upbringing and, in fact, the core belief central to his makeup, a strong feeling that people should be treated fairly in life and that evil must be confronted and challenged, comes from watching ... I was hoping this book would take the concepts Obama spoke of during his campaign and, having the leisure of a book, expand on them. I expected an in-depth treatment of his policies and goals.

Instead, this book is a tribute to redundancies and purple prose, and seems to be a protest against pronouns. It's terribly written.

William Proxmire's tradition of Fleece Awards is seriously demeaned by this half-effort. Fleeced was accepted as public servant and politician misuse of taxpayer funds. Even with the subtitle suggesting this would be more than that it really does not show how the public is being fleeced Far too much is the author's unjustified predictions of federal actions under a president Obama which largely discounts Mr.Obama's actual statements. Another major part alleges that American people and corporations are supporting the terroist support activities of, largely, Iran. This section first buys into the Bush administration's fearmongering regarding the Iranian government without any investigation or justification and than proceeds to describe a variety of business activities which have no direct effects of terrorism support ... First of all, this is a must read book for any historian, political scientist, or public servant. After having lived nine years in Germany and England myself, I arrived back in the U.S. in 2004 to "shock and awe" at how pedantic and manipulative the politcal process in the U.S. had become (perhaps it was me that had changed and not the political process?). For one thing, W. was elected by scaring people into voting for him. This most recent political debate has been no less frustrating for me. Despite what I consider to be a good result, I can only hope Obama didn't mean some of the promises he made in the election.

In any case, without oversimplifying the message of this book, I find Andrew Bacevich has articulated much of a sound rejection of American "conventional wisdom" in his look at U.S. policy. It's ... Read More

RAJESH C. OZA, ANUPAMA R. OZA, and SIDDHARTHA R. OZA

"Growth takes place whenever a challenge evokes a successful response that, in turn, evokes a further and different challenge. We have not found any intrinsic reason why this process should not repeat itself indefinitely, even though a majority of civilizations have failed, as a matter of historical fact."--Arnold J. Toynbee, A Study of History

This piece--co-authored by a middle-aged father, his recently-graduated-from-college daughter, and his college-going son--is a collective engagement with Fareed Zakaria's The Post-American World. The father is anxious about how effectively Americans are utilizing the advantage of world-class universities; the daughter is seeking to address the inequity of unequal access to higher education; and the son is optimistic ...
