Books : Expressionism: A Revolution in German Art (Big Series Art)
Great book, good illustrations. Some of the chapters are very badly edited, however. One repeats the phrase "his illness, from which he never recovered" four times in a short chapter. More typically, they end abruptly with no proper conclusion, as if chopped so as not to exceed space limitations. The writing/editing is the disappointing weak point here. Other times, terms are dropped or events referenced that have not yet been explained in the text. As an art book, the strength of the art can carry it. But it's a shame that it had to be this way.

This book is the best introduction to the major artistic movement in Germany in the early XXth century. It covers all the main currents, from the Blaue Reiter (Kandinsky, Marc...) to the Brücke (Kirchner, Heckel, Müller...)and the New Objectivity (Grosz, Dix, Bekmann...). The text is clear, easy to read, unburdened by any useless erudition, and the illustrations are numerous, even though -as is the case with all the volumes in this collection- mostly in black and white.

As a long time admirer of Marc, Klee and Kandinsky this charming book is a visit with old friends. The colors are beautiful. Although suitable to be read aloud to a young child it is equally a delight to an adult.

Rose-Carol Washton Long constructed this anthology around a volume of essays in order to reveal a variety of voices associated with this artistic movement. Her work is meant to augment the scope of interpretations formed around the cultural conditions of Germany. She presents a kaleidoscope of textual data from many primary sources, some of them being translated in English for the first time, that paint a detailed picture of the society, politics, and artistic regimes. Long approaches the movement in an investigatory manner that uncovers an untapped resource full of direct information. She doesn't necessarily ... Read More

I shelled out a lot of cash when this book came out. There were few other books available. I'll be honest, I bought it for the artwork. I recently began to read the essays....they are great, this book is worth the price. If you have a great interest in German Expressionism, you will find this a very enjoyable reference.

I am teaching a class on Utopian Images: Fact and Fiction and after the various novels, both utopian (e.g., "New Atlantis," "Looking Backward) and dystopian (e.g., "Brave New World," "Fahrenheit 451"), as well as the attempts to establish communal utopias in the United States (e.g., the Shakers, Oenida), there was a significant architectural movement involved with utopian structures. While not as primary an emphasis as the other two categories, there are certainly some interesting aspects of this aesthetic movement.

While the word "utopia," originally created by Sir Thomas More, paradoxically means both "no place" and "good place," obviously for architects it is the latter idea that is compelling. "Expressionist Utopias: Paradise, Metropolis, Architectural Fantasy," was originally ... Read More
