I was hoping this book would take the concepts Obama spoke of during his campaign and, having the leisure of a book, expand on them. I expected an in-depth treatment of his policies and goals.

Instead, this book is a tribute to redundancies and purple prose, and seems to be a protest against pronouns. It's terribly written.

Okay, I'll admit this. I really don't have a strong understanding of the economy. I'm trying, with some of my reading that I've been doing lately (try: The Conscience of a Liberal, to inform myself on the cause of the recent economic disaster, and what to do about it. It's clear, regardless of my understanding of the crisis, that it is a crisis nonetheless. Economist Robert Kuttner has written a very timely and prescient book on this issue called "Obama's Challenge: America's Economic Crisis and the Power of a Transformative Presidency."

Kuttner, co-founder of the liberal "American Prospect", writes about Obama's position in history of becoming another truly transformative president, in the mold of Lincoln, FDR, and even LBJ (prior to Vietnam). The first couple of chapters of the ... Read More

This beautifully produced photo book chronicles Barack Obama's presidential campaign. There are no official "posed" photographs. They all appear to be candids, all 150 of them. Dozens of photographers contributed, including the famed Annie Leibovitz. Her relaxed portrait of Obama is in the introduction to the book.

Topics range from the obviously historic to the small and intimate. Huge rallies are juxtaposed with a close-up of Obama's wrist wearing a bracelet of a soldier killed in Iraq. Here he is on a cell phone, on a Blackberry, with Bill Clinton, playing basketball. In a deep conversation with Hillary on a campaign plane. Delivering pizza to his staff and volunteers. One spread is nothing but magazines with the candidate's face on the cover.

The Obama family is well ... Read More

Writers who can put together an argument either in favor of or against a political candidate seem to surface around presidential election time. This book is a one sided viewpoint written by political reporter for National Review Online, David Freddoso, The Case Against Barack Obama. This captivating chronology of Obama's career presents a history of the meteoric rise to fame of an obscure newcomer who now stands on the threshold of claiming the number one prize in American politics, President of the United States.

Freddoso cleverly provides insinuations which try to have the reader to draw, but one conclusion, Barack Obama uses poor judgment in the selection of his friends and supporters. Association with questionable people who supported his political and personal ambitions is presented ... Read More

This is an outstanding and thoroughly entertaining history of American politics and culture (and how they intertwine) between 1964 - 1972. He details how Nixon succeeded as a politician because he learned lessons early on how to exploit people's fears for his gain. The main premise is that this strategy created the primary ideological divide--think liberal vs. conservative or blue vs. red--that exists in American today. Final paragraph: "How does Nixonland end? It has not ended yet." Even though this premise doesn't always hold up, I still cannot recommend this book highly enough.

One of my earliest memories, at about age 4, is looking over a sea of people at a 1968 Hubert Humphrey rally. My folks were good establishment democrats. They'd also been huge King followers, and had been to the March on Washington. His death was the seminal political event I heard as a young child. They'd been a fan of JFK, of course, but I curiously had heard little of RFK from them. I suspect his death, as it did for so many, sunk them into cynicism and resignation.

This book, then, was a revelation to me. Clarke's narrative moves along at breakneck pace mirroring RKF's ferocious but brief campaign. He brings the campaign to life, and what a ride it was. Though RFK is the central figure, the real story is America itself. He writes of RFK's ability to transcend multiple segments of ... Read More

Lee Iacocca was perhaps the man most responsible for CEOs becoming celebrities and super millionaires. He's been retired now for about 15 years and this is his assessment of the state of America. It is a blunt indictment of American culture, the people, AND the leaders. A quote (pg. 205): "You don't have to be a genius to see that a nation full of overeating, pill-popping, TV watching, iPod wired, shopaholic, attention-deficit-disordered people is not going to make it. We could be headed for extinction if we don't watch out." He mostly blames leadership--political as well as business. This is page after page of what is wrong with our country. I think he's right. And he offers a pretty good remedy as far as what and how leaders must change/do to redirect the ship (which in today's NY Times 81% of people polled ... Read More

I admit I have only skimmed this book. I did read every review here so far, and it is obvious all the 1-star "commentos" have not read this book. I disagree that "most of America doesnt share his values", they agree what THEY think his values are. There is a big difference between agreeing and disagreeing. obama played this game very tactfully.

Lets just hope he uses his brilliance to do good, instead of an evil political superhero or something.

'nuff said.

There is a very nice description of the essentials of narrative theory and its relation to personality theory to start but then the focus is on frames and two narratives in particular, those of the strict father and empathy. This becomes essentially the Kantian Enlightenment narrative versus the evolution (complex systems) narrative with argument that contemporary neuroscience supports the evolution narrative instead of the Enlightenment narrative. The evolution narrative then becomes the New Enlightenment narrative. Conservatives primarily hold the Enlightenment Narrative and Progressives the New Enlightenment Narrative. (For an interesting sense of how this difference changes the interpretation of a person see his other book "Philosophy in the Flesh")

This is a book by one of the world's pre-eminent linguists about the way current political issues are framed by the parties. Republicans, Lakoff asserts, are much better at framing the issues, thanks to years of well-funded think tank work, skillful planning and organization. The model he uses to describe the underlying belief systems of the Republican and Democratic parties are based on types of parenting. The GOP philosophy is based on the "strict parent model," where the father of a family protects the family in a dangerous world, supports the family, teaches them right from wrong, and enforces punishment when necessary. The Progressive metaphor is that of the nurturant parent, who believes that the world is basically good and that it and people can be made better through cooperation and empathy.
