Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of Glenny's book is how well he traces the births of organized crime groups, what enables them and why they do what they do. This book isn't a comprehensive manual of all organized crime in the world for Interpol use as some may expect, but a tour through environments that spawn criminal groups. After describing the scams, crimes, how they're executed and how the criminals make a profit, he traces the groups' origins, analyzes their social environment, why their service is in demand and what keeps them in business (no real rule of law, people want to buy their wares/services no matter what, etc.). If you wan to know where and why organized crime gets its steam and its profits, this is definitely a book for your reading list.

I read the book cover to cover and loved it. Dr. Berlinski's writing style is very concise and a little unique. The resulting concentration of ideas and references had me re-reading portions occasionally to make sure I didn't miss anything. The main topic is to throw very well reasoned arguments back in the face of some prominent atheists to show that their confidence is rather misplaced and to do so with the maximum of wit and humor. Topics covered include the real results of atheistic world views in government, the evidence for and against the possible existence of God, Darwinism, the "many worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics, the mind, computers, the Standard Model and the big bang.

It's only 225 smaller-sized pages in 10 chapters. It is a quick read in one place but perfect ... Read More

I've never written a book review before but this collection of toilet paper is just awful. I'm open minded, not at all nationalistic but boy Dmitry sure is. He repeatedly goes off on tangents about how great the Soviet Union was compared to stupid ol' smelly America. By his logic capitalism is actually a bigger failure than communism because it has lasted longer. He's Delusional.

Yes, he observed his country's collapse but he hasn't a clue about America. I was hoping for insightful ideas backed up by facts I could use to help wake up all the American sheep. What I got instead was thinly veiled communist propaganda from a ignorant sore loser nobody.

On the other hand, the book gave me hope; for if this moron thinks our country is headed for collapse we just might be ok after all.

The authors do an excellent job of describing the events at the Pentagon following 9/11. I write for a blog on 9/11 conspiracy theories, and this book is a refreshing change from that nuttery, but that is not what this book is about. This book is about the heroism and professionalism of the military and the first responders. Every page will keep you interested, and inspire you with the strength of how these ordinary Americans got through this extraordinary and horrendous event.

I agree with most of Harris' thesis and was sympathetic to those views of which I am not in agreement up until Harris' argument regarding moral equivalency. Of course a moral equivalency between the bombing of the pharmaceutical plant in Sudan during the Clinton administration and the events of 9/11 is an atrocious argument to make, but I think Harris betrays the intellectual justification for his entire thesis by glossing over and discounting the discussion here.

As enlightened as contemporary Christian nations may be when compared to their predecessors in centuries past, it is impossible to ignore, as it appears Harris does, the clout the idea of heaven has for American Christians. Harris implores his critics to simply take Muslims at their word and look at the motivations they espouse as justification for their actions, ... Read More

6.Right Is Wrong: How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe by: Arianna Huffington

Ms. Huffington offers a less than artful propaganda rant. Ms. Huffington's methods are thus: stack the deck and only enunciate facts that support her preconceived position, ignore the evidence if it disagrees with her position, ignore the question by attacking her opponent's credibility on something that is totally unrelated to the issue at hand, and if he is unable to come up with anything embarrassing to her opponent just ignorantly name call.

Ms. Huffington uses her blunt techniques in her discussion of global warming. She most of time attacks Congressional foes of the global warming hoax by spotlighting some perceived blemish to their records that is completely irrelevant. In other cases she can only shriek that certain Senators with one hundred times her intelligence and knowledge are 'dumb' or the 'dumbest Senator'. Oh puhlease.

I read Ann Coulter for the entertainment. I do not always agree with her views, but I enjoy how she expresses herself. In this book, there is really nothing new from her.
I find this to be right up my alley - the book is a large collection of Ann Coulter quotes from her weekly column, various interviews and previous books. Instead of the little political diatribe with some humor mixed in somewhere, the book is punchline after punchline of Ann at her best.
I'd rate this book a must read for fans of Coulter. Definitely not for the easily offended.

8.Power to Save the World: The Truth About Nuclear Energy by: Gwyneth Cravens

Ms. Cravens has written a very good book discussing the complete nuclear power cycle from a lay person's perspective. Her discussions concerning power baseloading and comparing nuclear sources to coal sources for powering the national power grid are narratives that are rarely, if ever, discussed outside of the power industry due to the emotional issues that nuclear power brings forth in people.

As a non-technical author and former protester against nuclear power, Ms. Cravens tackles the subject material of nuclear power, the security issues, health issues and comparisons to other major power sources with a thoroughness not usually seen at this level. Her approach to "tag along" with noted retired DOE scientist, Rip Anderson and his openness and patience towards teaching a non-technically trained person the ins and outs of the nuclear power cycle add ... Dr. Meeker's book provides fathers with an unflinching glimpse into the world that girls are growing up in today. She provides bleak statistics about the dangers of promiscuity, drugs, unrealistic body image and the lack of a moral compass provided by society. She follows this up with evidence of how fathers who stick to their guns can help their daughters not only survive, but thrive in the face of these various snares. She continually reminds fathers to look at the world not through their own eyes, but through the eyes of their daughters and provides various scenarios for fathers to consider.

My daughter is five and I am glad that I read this book now. I plan to re-read it again and again as she grows older. I highly recommend it.

A very digestible read for the consumer that's liable to provoke dyspepsia in the bellies of food giants and governments alike.
In taking a moralistic view of starvation and obesity, our media, governments and many NGOs have condemned those suffering to more of the same. While the institutional causes remain unaddressed - in large part thanks to public sector responsibility being abdicated to private sector interests - we can only expect more headlines about food riots and editorials on farmer suicides, just as diabetes (II) continues apace.
The resounding conclusion is that `free market' policies remain accountable only to shareholders - not to farmers, not to consumers, and certainly not to the governments that unleashed them.
But Stuffed & Starved is as prescriptive as it is diagnostic. By identifying the grassroots organisations that have come to terms with ... Read More
