If "Jane" had been "Rizzoli", and there had been just a little bit more character development, this book would have been over the top. The writing, as always, is excellent. The plot twists. The archaeological information is fascinating. But the family life is missing. Maura's internal questioning continued her story, but I missed Jane's mother, and Gabriel Dean. They were shadowy figures dispensed with in a few paragraphs. I like to see the "Jane at home" parts of the story -- it adds such dimension to her character. It didn't, of course, keep me from staying up half the night to finish the book. The writing and the plot pulled me right along. I couldn't put it down.

We are all impressed with Patricia Cornwell's [Kay Scarpetta's]knowledge of Italy; places, food, drink etc. I guess we are all a bunch of Rednecks with our noses pressed to the window of a world we can never be a part of.
I swore after the very dismal effort of Predator I would not read another Scarpetta mystery. However I relented and read this one. It was a little better. Slightly more human than the last. But I hate it when an author rushes through the final chapter. She still leaves you hanging over the fate of one of the main characters that has been piviotal in so many of her works. I like what Ms. Cormwell has done with Benton and Lucy. Maybe Scarpetta does have a heart.
Will I read Scarpetta when it comes out in December? Probably, but I won't be putting my name on a ... Read More

The ending is a blatant rip-off of the climax of The Silence of the Lambs. A very well-written rip-off, but a rip-off all the same.

Otherwise, I thought this was a great book, well developed characters, good backgrounds on all of them, and avoidance of most cliches. The only thing I really didn't like was the characterization of Jane Rizzoli. She's the book's other female protagonist, someone we should be empathizing with, and to me, she just came off as a grade-A, you-know-what. Defensive about everything and uber-hostile to Catherine Cordell because she's attractive, and generally in need of a good smackdown.

yes, the book was great, very intense in part. But the last few chapters were so scattered I felt like i had to go back to see what I had somehow missed. And the whole car murders inbetween seemed lifeless. I never truly understood what that was all about. If someone figured out how the night watcher and the doctor were involved I would be happy to have them explain it to me. Otherwise it seems like night watcher followed him around killing people and then he took all the credit for the murders in a round about way to win the court case. weird.

Robin Cook has certainly been one of my favorite authors along with Issac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen Baxter and the like. As far as medical thrillers are concerned he is probably the best writer out there at the moment and has been for many years now. The verdict in short - This effort doesn't do justice to many of his previous stellar works. What was interesting though, from my relatively unique perspective as a surgeon from India who subsequently went through surgical residency in NYC, was his focus on medical tourism and his overall grasp of India. I have to say that on both these counts, his portrayal has been very realistic. His acknowledgement that private hospitals in India matched up easily to their western counterparts is a fact well known to people in India, but a recognition from ... Read More

I first read this when it had just come out. I had been living in Canada and had just returned to the States and to the American Medical Business.

I was shocked, distressed, disgusted at what I read. Yet, as I knew many first year residents in hospitals at the same time I read this book, I knew how true it was.

I was thoroughly disgusted with the field that exploited its med students (and especially its residents and young physicians, at the great life-and-often-death expense of patients, just so hospitals and attending physicians can enrich themselves.

No wonder the author became a psychiatrist after writing this book.

Sad to say, much of what went on then still stands.

However, some limits on the number of hours residents can work have ... Read More

Though depicted as a novel, Black Flies is concise enough for a perfect novella. Or, as it expounds upon the experiences of a paramedic in Harlem, it is also appropriate to label the work as a series of vignettes (albeit with a clear storyline). Whatever its categorization, Black Flies is a frightening work that conveys the both the physical and psychological hardship of being a paramedic. Indeed, it's not just the suffering that medics are trained to alleviate, it is a story that ponders about who responds to the first responders.

The story revolves around Ollie Cross, newly assigned to the 18th precinct. Cross voluntarily selects the 18th to get hardcore paramedic experience while preparing to pass the MCATs he desperately needs for acceptance into medschool. The experience he receives can ... Read More

Reichs is an awesome writer, and her skill with plotting and words still shone through this somewhat convoluted storyline. There were simply too many people, too many plot twists, too many historical references and figures, and too many unfamiliar terms for me to keep straight. I found myself racing to the end to finish. And I was sure glad when I could mark this "done." If you have a degree in religion, archaeology, or Jewish history, you'll probably keep up just fine. But for us mere mortals, it was way over my head.

I found myself skimming over many pages, especially those with "Norrie" and Rose, to get on with the main thrust of the book - an historical who-dun-it. Rose's plight was established and then dwelt on over and over, as if the reader hadn't already gotten the idea! It's a 370 pge hardcover edition that could be cut by 100 pages.
