Must have been the times in which it was first released because this book did nothing for me. I just don't get why people rave about this book. This is one of those rare cases where you should watch the movie and forget the book.

I've been a Grisham fan for years, but I must admit I was a bit disappointed in his ending here. He left to many ends untied in the end; however, the rest of the book was an excellent critique of the election system in general.

Great book. Martini writes like a bulldog with a bone. He rarely dwells on the gory details of the crime involved, highlighting just what is necessary to further the story, using legal issues as a fulcrum to build momentum and interest.

A newborn baby is found, dead, in a barn located on an Amish dairy farm. After a brief investigation, 18-year-old Katie Fisher is arrested and charged with murder. Even in the face of mounting evidence, Katie denies not only the murder, but also that she had a baby in the first place.

Katie's story is intertwined with that of Ellie Hathaway, the hard-as-nails defense attorney who takes on Katie's case as a favor to her Aunt Leda.

As in other Picoult novels, the topic is pulled from the headlines and much of the story centers around Katie's trial and the inevitable twist at the end.

Well developed characters and a detailed and realistic peek into Amish life.

It's a bad sign when you lose track of the original plot because the author spends so much time on a separate plot.

The author describes every detail of every character and everyone's past to such an extent, the book has no forward momentum and eventually you lose interest.

I couldn't even finish...every 10 pages or so there is an interesting development, but not enough to keep me interested...less would have been a lot more.

In "A Patent Lie," by Paul Goldstein, forty-seven year old attorney Michael Seeley is a solo practitioner in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. He has a part-time receptionist, his office is a dump, and he handles "nickel and dime cases." On a chilly autumn day, his younger brother, Leonard, whom he hasn't seen in nine years, stops by to see him. Since Leonard lives in San Francisco, where he works as the chief medical officer for a small biotech company, this is not a casual visit. For weeks, Leonard has been leaving Michael frantic messages. It seems that Leonard's employer, Vaxtek, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against a giant Swiss drug producer, St. Gall. The trial is scheduled to begin in three weeks, and Robert Pearsall, Vaxtek's lead attorney, has suddenly died, an apparent suicide. Leonard ... Read More

I'm not sure what I was expecting from this. Someone told me that anyone familiar with the law would see how poor Grisham's books were, legally speaking. I've only had a year of law school, but I didn't notice anything glaringly wrong with the legal material. All of the problems were with everything else.

The story starts out interestingly enough - an eccentric billionaire commits suicide and leaves nothing to his spoiled children. He leaves everything to an illegitimate daughter who is working as a missionary in South America, but who wants nothing to do with the 11 billion dollars. What ensues is a legal battle for the ages.

The best parts of the story are all about the legal maneuvering. There is a 20 page span concerning the depositions where Grisham hits his stride. Essentially, anything ... Read More

For those of you expecting another great Dismas Hardy/Abe Glitsky novel, don't be fooled by the book jacket. Hardy/Glitzky appear in the first ten pages and then not for another 250-300 pages, reappearing only for the last 110. This book should not really be advertised as featuring these characters. I'm glad I got it from the library or I really would have been unhappy.

I'm so glad that Linda Fairstein is back on track; each of her last several books has been riveting, and Killer Heat is no exception.

It is a brutally hot New York summer, and we can almost feel it as our heroine Alexandra Cooper and her sidekicks Mike and Mercer find themselves on the trail of a particularly brutal serial rapist/killer. As they try desperately for clues, the high-profile case is involving the Mayor, who has to assuage the press, and everyone on down, from the Police Chief to the Homicide Squad to the Sex Crimes Unit. Our three have to battle the unrelenting heat, long hours, and seemingly endless tangled and incomphrehensible clues. Meanwhile, the killer is active.

Wound around the tale is an interesting history of New York's islands, some deserted, some used as historical sites. The only reason ... Read More

I love that Lisa Scottoline brought Bennie, Anne, Judi and Mary back in this book. They have been gone for 5 years. Ms. Scottoline lost her father and stated in several interviews that she just didn't know if she could go back to writing about her main characters. She's has completed several wonderful stand alone books but this is her bread and butter. I'm not sure if it's where I've missed the crew so bad or if the book is just very good. I enjoyed the the mystery and the interaction of the characters. Ms. Scottoline writes about emotions and feelings not just action. Although there is a lot of action in this book and you will want to sit down and try to make it through it in one reading. She just makes you feel what the characters are feeling. She shows you the different points of view logically and coherently. I'm very excited that ... Read More
