I read this book quickly and mostly enjoyed it...but it's lightweight and won't stand much scrutiny...I enjoyed the vivid picture I got of Salem, but the characters are one-dimensional and have a National Enquirer world view...

I've stuck with Stephanie Plum through think and thin, but this is the end. I'm just glad I took it out of the library rather than paying $28. Other reviewers have said it all, the verve's not there, so I'll stick to the low points: formulaic pablum and at least one misleading bit. "...and we all piled into Lula's Firebird. Lula drove north on 206, past Rider College, to a neighborhood of modest homes." Well Rider College, actually University since 1994, is in Lawrenceville, NJ, a goodly piece from the Burg, and there are no such neighborhoods. Immediately north of Lawrenceville is Princeton. Apparently J.E.'s forgetting her NJ geography up there in New Hampshire. Shame on St. Martin's press, too, for letting that slip through. So, J.E's jumped the shark, and Terry Pratchett ... Elizabeth Peters has another winner on her hands!! Vickie is her same, saucy self (yes I know alliteration), John hasn't changed his attitude one bit and Schmidt has a secret that will take you by surprise. I love the fact that there is a mysterious lady trailing after John and she seems to have three names (two pseudonyms and one real). When they finally meet up it is one of the funniest bits in the book. It was also a pleasure to find out that there is an Emerson/Peabody link in these stories too. I do recommend this one.

the main character is just too sweet to take. She defers to her man in all things. This book belongs in the 50s with Father Knows Best

In case you don't know, the Woman's Murder Club is made up of San Francisco Detective Lindsay Boxer, Assistant D.A. Yuki Castellano, Medical Examiner Claire Washburn and Reporter Cindy Thomas. In this one we have three story lines going at once, all interesting. The book opens with wacko Fred Brinkley firing six shots at passengers on a ferry. Four people die and Murder Club Member Claire Washburn is wounded. Brinkley is quickly arrested, but is he sane, Yuki is going to try awfully darned hard to prove he is. Meanwhile person or persons unknown are kidnapping rich kids and their nannies. The nannies turn up without a pulse, but the children are kept by the nefarious bad guys, who warn the families that their darlings will remain alive and unharmed as long as they don't go to the cops.
