The pinnacle of Agatha Christie. This is a fast-paced series of murders that manages to be thoroughly engrossing and disgusting and twisted. Wonderful.

This is a well written book. I was surprised to find myself propelled forward throughout as it is a combination of the details of an historical event and yet is a mystery. I thought that the writer captured the life of the people and the beliefs of the time very well.
This is a good read

This is a coffee table book filled with interesting essays to complement Elizabeth Peter's delightful Amelia Peabody Emerson mysteries about a family of archaeologists in Victorian and Edwardian Egypt.

The essays cover the history of Egyptology, the British in Egypt, and Islam, as well as housekeeping with servants, feminism, fashion, music, schooling, technological advances and popular fiction in the period. The book is also filled with engravings and photographs, including several pictorial essays.

These are fascinating. One features Shepheards, the Cairo hotel frequented by the British community during the period, which was burned in a demonstration in 1952.

There are also several lengthy reference lists, of (apparently all the) people mentioned in the Peabody books ... Read More

"The Secret Adversary" is the very first adventure of Tommy and Tuppence, Agatha Christie's pair of amateur sleuths, and what an adventure they have. Tommy Beresford and Prudence 'Tuppence' Cowley manage to solve a threatening international crisis, by luck and intuition it would seem, rather than more ordinary methods of detection. As an introduction to the pair, who would have further adventures after their marriage, "The Secret Adversary" is fast-paced and intriguing.

Having met each other once again by chance, Tommy and Tuppence, old childhood friends, decide to advertise themselves as "Young Adventurers" who will take any charge that's well paid, no matter the danger. But before they can even post their ad, they are drawn into a mysterious web of intrigue regarding a missing draft of a peace treaty ... Read More

This is a paperback by other authors who review the
series on Stephanie Plum. So, it is rather like a
fun assignment...first, you have to read a few of the
books; then see if you agree or disagree on their review.
The chapter I found exceedingly hysterical is on car insurance.
I think it is a good read but perhaps I am a teeny bit prejudice
about this series, as I think it is one of the best!! You
decided....

I was disappointed in this book. I expected a map of the 4-corners area or several maps with details. This would have been fun to use as a reference as you read the Hillerman books to follow detectives Leaphorn & Chee travels thru Navajoland. Also, the few pictures that were in the book, were in black & white. That would have been OK if they had been sharper and crisper.

I'm using this book for a Detective Literature class. It covers the three genres of detective fiction and includes some superb critical essays. The stories are well chosen and the book is laid out well.

I will keep this book and read the rest of it when I get the time.

The Doorbell Rang by Rex Stout

A widow visits Nero Wolfe with a large check and a large problem. She bought a thousand copies of a book ("The FBI Nobody Knows") and gave them to Congressmen, state legislatures, editors and publishers, etc. Now she and her adult children are being followed day and night, and her phones were tapped. Nero Wolfe says he knows of nothing to stop that. But her large check makes the sale. Wolfe first finds out as much as he can from a well-connected person. A confidential source tells Archie Goodwin about an unsolved murder mystery. So Goodwin starts to investigate the people who knew Morris Althaus, journalist. Relatives, friends, and co-workers are interviewed. There is no guarantee of a solution. But the investigation continues.

Nero Wolfe sets a very clever trap to tempt ... Read More

An interesting book about the intersection of two lives: Mary Rogers, a popular local girl in 19th century New York who died under mysterious circumstances and Edgar Allan Poe who fictionalized Mary's story and used his literary prowess to try and clear up the questions surrounding her death. In all honesty, the most interesting bits of this book were the parts that focused exclusively on the Mary Rogers case itself. It is a very bizarre and unique true-crime story with all sorts of interesting suspects and unusual evidence. The sections of the book that focus on Poe are interesting, but somewhat detract from the Mary Rogers story. Mainly because Poe's take on the Mary Rogers case was so terribly convoluted and seemed to suffer a great deal under the weight of his enormous ego. But there is quite a bit of biographical material ... Read More
