Most of the reviewers have it right. This volume is meant to introduce change, but it does so in a very poor manner. Even though I'm not reading the series in order, I've noticed the past few I've read have a lot of short cuts in them - the same phrases are used to describe people or cats or places over and over again within the same book. In this volume, the shortcuts include not developing the plot or Qwill's reaction to major events going on in his life. If the series is ending, let's have a proper wrap up. If it's evolving, then let's make a transition.

I enjoyed the early books in this series, but like many other reviewers, am getting tired of the politics involved. Also, while I appreciate the descriptions of life in rural Virginia, is it necessary for Ms. Brown to trash people from other areas?

I'm also noticing inconsistencies, some of which have already been pointed out by others. One that I noticed that hasn't been brought up yet is that Big Mim states to Little Mim that she never had an abortion, but in an earlier book in which a doctor is poring through old medical records, it is revealed that Big Mim did, in fact, have an illegal abortion. Either Ms. Brown is getting sloppy or Big Mim lied to her daughter. Hmmm....

Please, RMB, be more thorough and get back to the plain old mystery telling and animal banter ... Read More

Rita Mae Brown's Mrs. Murphy mysteries have begun to take on aspects of a soapbox...and it's irritating. What I found enjoyable in the earlier books were the interactions among the characters, human and animal, and the descriptions of the beautiful Virginia countryside. There's less and less of that now. Instead we're treated to personal harangues...and there's not even a balanced rebuttal or a respectable opposing perspective. I 've just begun reading the book after this one, "The Purrfect Murder" and it's even worse. But I'll withhold judgement until I'm finished with it. Still loyality keeps me going and I keep hoping the old Mrs. Murphy will come through in the end.

These three cats keep me wanting more. They are pure delight and there is a wonderful cast of "humans" to go along with them.

The first few books of this long series were rather charming mysteries, if a bit too cozy, perhaps, but they have dribbled down to pointless treacle. This book is virtually plotless, with flat characters, silly diialogue, and a vague but over-sweet atmosphere. Abundant use of exclamation points does not make a flat story seem to be dramatic.

I'd rather remember the cat who books of the earlier entries in the series. It's time to stop them--now. I, for one, will read no more of them.

In this "Cat who" installment, LJB does a terrific job of introducing and maintaining tension. It starts out with a sunny premise -- Qwill decides he and the cats need some quiet time to reflect, so that's how he ends up in the bucolic Potato Mountains. The trip begins with Qwill getting lost on the mountain's long and winding roads. The house is bigger and more foreboding than he expected or wanted, and it turns out to be the site of a murder. It rains all the time, often accompanied by power outages. You get the idea. The mystery is intriguing and the story is filled with new, eccentric characters. Best of all, I thought I knew early on "whodunnit," and I was wrong.

Qwill and the Siamese move into the apple barn. It is spectacular! The cats and Qwill seem to be very cozy. Qwill gets ready for bed and looks out the window to see a caravan of carlights heading his way. It happens to be the cast of Henry VIII, dropping by for a barn warming party.

The party lasts quite late. After they leave the cats get jumpy and look out the window to see a leftover car. After several minutes, Qwill decides to go investigate. He discovers the dead body of the high school principal. Qwill and Koko work to solve the crime.

Qwill comments about Polly being jealous. Read this book to see if, in fact, Qwill is the jealous party.

This was a very enjoyable book. You will enjoy it too.

I realized recently that as much as I love these books, I've read relatively few in the series given how many there actually are (30 to date, if you include the one collection of short stories). Usually laughed off by the masses as kitschy `old-lady' books, those who read them know they're quite the opposite and are actually some of the cleverest bits of reading around. Braun, a former journalist whose advanced age has no doubt contributed to the mistaken notion that these books are about old ladies and their cats, has a wit so sharp and a perception so keen that you almost never see her coming at you until it's too late and it's zoomed right past you. Her fondness for the mysterious and almost mystical Siamese cat is no different than Dean Koontz's love affair with Golden Retrievers, and far less sappy and sentimental. ... Read More
