In Home, 38-year-old Glory Boughten returns to her childhood home to care for her dying father, a retired Presbyterian minister. Not long after Glory's arrival, her wayward brother Jack arrives after a twenty-year absence. By returning home, Glory and Jack are fleeing unhappy pasts and confronting inner turmoil. Robinson shows Glory and Jack reconnecting in slow, weighty dialog that emphasizes just how serious things are. The story is filled with religious discussions, regretful confessions, and also plenty of forgiveness. Movements are small, comments are oblique, and nothing much happens. Eventually, a secret is revealed about Jack, but, by that point in the story, we realize Home is not about what happens. Instead, it's about revealing the meaning of this life by understanding where we come ... Read More

I enjoyed the 2nd novel from Hosseini almost as much as Kite Runner, which I gave 5 stars. The author tells a fascinating human story with well-developed characters in rich prose that is all the more impressive because it is not the author's native tongue. Everyone should read Kite Runner, and once you've figured out why everyone loved the book, you'll want to read this novel, too, and you won't be disappointed.

I can't count the amount of times I was holding the tears back to keep from balling. Such a powerful story about sin, guilt, betrayel, and forgiveness. It's unbeleivable how the emotions toil page after page from anger to hatred to sadness and even love. This is brutal, there is no doubt, but it is a must read for anyone who appreciates humanity and the power of love.

Thanks for writing this book...

WOW! This book deserves 5 gold stars crusted with precious jewels. Rarely does a book like this come along. I have been told the movie (by the same name) is very good, also. I can hardly wait to see it. It is difficult to give this book justice; it is that good. I was late for work, because I was so caught up in the story. I did not want this book to end. More books of this caliber are needed.
The setting is Albany. Captain Caleb Holt is a firefighter that makes better decisions at work than at home. He lives by the firefighters adage: NEVER LEAVE YOUR PARTNER!! Unfortunately, he leaves the adage at the firehouse instead of bringing it home ... Read More

I LOVED this book. I especially enjoyed the Hema & Kaushik triology. Lahiri's writing just seems to flow with ease, and it's a pleasure to read. I just love the way her stories unfold very carefully. I actually liked this collection of short stories even more than Interpreter of Maladies. It's the best book I've read in years.

I read this book because I'm trying to read a lot of the classics on the various "Top 100" book lists floating around out there. This book is on most of the lists so I added it to my list of books to read. Having never seen a movie adaptation either, I knew absolutely nothing about the story before I read it. I recognize that this book is beautifully written. I was amazed at the way Fitzgerald created art with words. However, the story itself did nothing for me. I realize that it was a story about shallow people living shallow lives but I finished it with the thought "Is that all there is?" I wanted somebody to get some comeuppence or something. I'll rate it a four for the art of the words alone.

I picked up Chuck Palahniuk's Choke after seeing the movie preview for the same title a few weeks ago. The movie preview made absolutely no sense, was hard to follow, and tough to summarize - as Palahniuk's novel would turn out to be. But the preview was intriguing enough to go out and buy the book, and I'm glad I did... sort of.

There really isn't much of a story line to Choke. The book centers on a drop-out med school student, Victor Mancini, who works at a colonial theme-park; fakes choking in restaurants to ultimately pay his mother's institutional bills; and is a raging sexaholic. In a strange twist, he also may be a direct descendant of Jesus Christ.

That pretty much sums up Choke.

The book doesn't so much present a linear story line, as it is a tale of self-discovery for Victor, who is trying to figure out his ... Read More

This book definetely will bring up a reaction from its readers.

The narration style gives the impression that the reader is watching the story evolve in front of them, a clever approach given the subject.

The part of the story which takes place in the hospital is very disturbing and strong.

I was disappointed with the ending, did not expect a positive ending given the tone of the story, and wonder why the author decided to go in that direction.

I recommend the book, but be forewarned about how strong the content is.
