From the first few pages I was turned off by the "f" word being continually used. If I had known more about this book I would not have spent the money.

I could not put this book down! The relationship between the two women is beautifully written. The tragic story is outweighed by the optimistic spirit. This was more than a good book. It is an instant classic that should be cherished for decades. I'm so thankful I took the time to read A Thousand Splendid Suns.

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS by Sara Gruen
May 15, 2008

Rating **** ½ (4.5/5 Stars)

There was a lot of hype surrounding this book the year it came out, and I usually don't like to read books like that until the fuss has died down a bit. A friend sent this to me and I finally found the time to read it (plus it was also a group read). The book definitely does live up to its reputation, and I will most likely list it as one of my favorite reads in 2008.

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS is the story of a man, who now in his golden years, is reminiscing about his past and his days with a traveling circus. The book goes back and forth between the two time periods, the present and the past (Depression era), and I think it was done quite nicely. Jacob Jankowski is the narrator and old ... Read More

I bought this book hoping for a quick read after reading heavy books about the Middle East. This book is a quick, easy read, but it's not very entertaining. I don't think it's very funny at all. I didn't really like the main character either, I felt like she was pretty shallow in the sense that the character was not well-developed. She was constantly complaining about her childhood and being fat, but never bothered to do much about either.

The book is a no-brainer you can read at the beach, but I wouldn't recommend it.

This is my first novel by this author, and it will probably win a major award this year. That being said, I was glad when, for some unknown reason, I turned to the end of the book halfway through and noticed in the acknowledgements that it had originally appeared as short stories in various periodicals. That explained to me the disjointed nature of the narrative, and I was somewhat relieved at my bewilderment.

"When we are young, the words are scattered all around us. As they are assembled by experience, so also are we, sentence by sentence, until the story takes shape." (p. 268) The story must have a shape, and this one falls short. It reads like the short stories that it was. I would argue that it is individual stories of individual characters - albeit well-written stories - with no real ... Read More

The handful of one-star reviews seemed to miss the point. The repetitive plot points and desolate wasteland illustrated optimism and the endearing force of human love, not a depressing world where man is monster. Actually, Cormac dances the line between both views, and it's not a new theme: humanity is both godly and demonic, both divine and absurd. This desolate landscape is utterly beautiful in its ugliness, and so are the people. As author, Cormac brilliantly combines gritty reality with a fantasy vision that is clearly meant to be no more than an apocalyptic metaphor--not a thrill ride. This is a short, gripping read that will haunt you and you won't forget it. The nameless father and "the boy" offer the ultimate symbolism in the end. To me, the "man" is all of men and the "boy" represents "innocence." These ... Read More

I have read every book that Jodi Picoult has written. This one is my least favorite. It was very hard to stay interested in this book. Many times I wanted to put it down and forget about it. It talked entirely too much about religion for me. Then it was pretty far fetched. I don't know, I just was not really impressed.

I should have known, but after so many years of noticing this author's books in airport bookstores and the like, I decided to give this a read. Sorry to seem like a lone dissenter, but I was turned off at the pat and rather cliched message of this story. Maybe for the teenager who is not all that keen on reading in the first place, yes, this might be a worthy read, but if you love litererature that has some substance to it you will be disappointed. Again, if you are new to reading anything spiritual, perhaps, this might be a good place to start.( But even the Harry Potter books are masterpieces compared to this).

What amazes me, though, is how so many have found this to be a fulfilling read. There's just no substance here. The protagonist, Santiago, held no interest for me, nor did the other characters who seemed so two ... Read More
