Don't be sucked in by the hype- it just isn't that good. The story really wanted to be a tragic work of art, but it ended up being a disjointed collection of thoughts. The writing was excellent. There were great descriptions of the dogs and the landscape, but the characters missed the mark entirely. The story of Henry was promising, however after all the build up we find out that inciting turmoil of the character is that he is "ordinary". How heartbreaking.

Like the Winchester mansion, the story was filled with unexplained oddities that just seemed to go nowhere. This is the second time I have bought a book that was lauded by Stephen King. I won't fall for that trick again =)

(4.5) Daniel Silva continues the Gabriel Allon series with this book and he does so with his usual style and talent. Many here have recounted the story line of the book, some in more detail than necessary, however if you are a fan of this writer and character, you are in for an enjoyable time in following his latest escapade, much of which is set in Mother Russia. Silva asures us this is a work of fiction. Let's hope it stays that way.

Not since Ender's Game have I read a SciFi novel that challenges how we define humanity and morality like this book. It was incredibly well written, amazing character development and really pressed the reader to question their own personal views and truths. I liked this book better than her other series which may be b/c I'm older than what the Twilight series is aimed for but it was also because this book had bigger questions behind it and was both challenging and stimulating. I read the Host and immediately followed it by Breaking Dawn and can't believe the same writer wrote them. Hands down the Host was a must read.

In that same breadth I sincerely hope that Ms. Meyer does not write a sequel. The ending was powerful, it wasn't completely tied with a pretty bow and the questions you were left ... Read More

This book is written in the form of letters that are sent from friend to friend. You have to pay attention to who is writing to whom because there are a lot of characters. There were also times when I had to put the book down because I felt so overwhelmed from so many of them. The story was interesting and at times quaint but I can not help but wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I read classics more often. The books aren't the core of this story they are just the start of a friendship between strangers from different countries. At times it also did annoy me that there was no real plot just little tidbits about each others lives. I want to like the book more but can only say it was ok and an interesting setting

I flew through this book without noticing. It is well written and has a good mix of real history and fiction.

Brunonia Barry's impressive debut novel is not set in Kansas, but in Salem, MA, forever infamous as the home of witches and other "crazies". The site of the tragic trials in 1692 is like no other town in the US. Setting her story of a mentally unbalanced young woman in Salem was a brilliant choice, because its foggy, mystical elements are more easily accepted against that most eccentric of backgrounds.

Protagonist Towner (Sophya) Whitney starts telling us her biographical tale by warning us not to believe her. She is a self-described liar, but having reached the end of the narrative (in which another point of view is also provided), I do not regard her as untruthful so much as deeply, seriously deluded, a fearful patient in denial so impenetrable that it requires breaking down with a sledge hammer. Towner's personal ... Read More

I don't read much of the spy thriller genre, but when I do, I hope that the author can match wits with the likes of someone from the intelligence community. Too much to ask, you say? Okay, well then how 'bout a little character development? How about some insightful historical context? No... ? A bit of thoughtful dialogue then, with one or two brilliant uses of descriptive "takes you there" scenery or witty turn of phrase? Alright, forget it. Can we have one or two cool spy gadgets and a wee bit of love and sexual tension?

In the end I couldn't finish it, even though I tried as it was a gift from a friend. Based on the first half though, I figure that that and the second half will probably show up on some daytime movie channel someday. Who knows, it might hold my attention until my workout's over on the treadmill... ... Read More

Water for Elephants has recently taken over the spot of my favorite book. The book flawlessly alternates between the main character's present day experience in a nursing home and his memories of his life during his early 20's. I was skeptical about the switching at first since many books that do this are usually confusing and I have to keep turning back a few pages to see what time period I'm in, but the author does this perfectly.

I completely fell in love with the main character, both the 92 year old and 23 year old versions of him. As someone who works in a nursing home, his experiences were so realistic and the author captured this perfectly.

The book was extremely well written and it was obvious that Gruen did her research. I found myself looking for more information about travelling circuses and downloading pictures ... Read More

I enjoyed this book because I did not know anything about Frank Lloyd Wright, except that he was an architect. This book puts you in his time period. It was sad though, but I guess love stories can be sad.
