this is the first book I read by zora neale hurston, truly not the last. I enjoy reading this book.

This was a book I felt I needed to have read for my general education and rounding as a person. I am aware of what people say about the way Hurston fabricated her life for this autobiography, but isn't all of history in some way fabricated and presented through someone's eyes? I mean, this is a highly subjective field, even when presenting mere facts, it is so easy to skew things when deciding which bits to leave in and which to take out. We all do it, Hurston is no exception. The spirit and nature of her life was captured beautifully: a sad (very), positive, hopeful, stubborn, opinionated, strong, resilient, hard-working woman. Tell My Horse provides good descriptions of some aspects of life for descendants of slaves in Jamaica and Haiti during the 1920's and 30's. It is objective without being judgmental. It is based on the author's personal experiences so is a first-hand account and is one of only a few such works in existence on this aspect of Caribbean life during this time period. While the subject of voodoo is covered thoroughly, Hurston also describes living conditions and some historical events that were relevant to her subject. The book appears to be well-researched and Hurston is sympathetic to her subjects without being overly sentimental.

This audio production on CD of Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is beautifully read by Ruby Dee. Hurston was known for her ability to write in the dialect of the rural South, thereby imbuing her work with a verisimilitude that makes it possible for a modern reader to feel connected to her characters in a visceral way. However, while trying to read the print edition of this marvelous story, I found myself often reading aloud. In effect, I had to translate as I went, which was frustrating. By listenig to Ruby Dee's inspired reading, I was able to be transported directly to the time & place depicted in Hurston's masterwork. It's a collection of tales featuring Brer Rabbit and many other critters. Plus there are numerous tales about people. Hurston collected the stories in the 1920s, and the language used is slave vernacular with plentiful occurrences of 'nigger.' I grew up with the language and enjoyed reading it and hearing it in my mind. I find it odd that Joel Chandler Harris is villified for collecting the old Brer Rabbit tales, and Hurston is applauded for doing the same thing. And I'm glad that both people preserved these treasures. The tales are funny and delightful. Back then people were able to laugh at themselves.

There are the traditional authors like Zora Neale Huston, James Baldwin, Charles Chesnutt, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Ralph Ellison, Ernest J. Gaines, Jean Toomer, and Richard Wright only to name a few. It's still a great anthology of assorted stories about African American life in America from the South to Chicago and New York.
