For those to are ecologically minded, a key part of creating any new product is to produce a life cycle assessment (LCA), which is also known as a cradle-to-grave analysis, working from manufacture (`cradle') to use and disposal (`grave'). The LCA investigates all of the environmental impacts of that product and attempts to minimise that damage. One of the key premises of McDonough & Brangart's book, is that minimising damage just isn't good enough. Instead, the authors propose that we change our entire design processes so that reuse and nourishment are built right into the process. Instead of minimising waste, we create value. Perhaps some of the previous reviewers liked it because they use it for inspiration when designing at the very high visual level -- because really, this book is about pictures. There is no useful information in the book about the design or construction of green roofs (except a couple of pages in passing). Want to know more about how to design and construct using membranes, insulation, drainage, soil and gravel? Then look elsewhere. Want to know more about how to design and construct a green roof on a new versus and existing building? Then look elsewhere. How about planning the maintenance needed for a green roof whilst at the design and construction phase? Again look elsewhere.

This book offers a good introduction into building with earth, straw and recycled materials. There are lots of nice photos with a brief story telling how and why the builders used the chosen materials. This book does not go into depth on how to make a home out of straw bale, adobe, rammed earth or any other techniques. There are lots of other good books that do though. I am kind of disappointed in a couple of the things the author says that are a bit misleading or untrue, probably unintentionally, but non the less they are there and you will not pick them out unless you are well read on alternative building techniques.

I've read this book a few times and each time enjoy it more. Bishop Lucker, who died a few years ago, was an intelligent voice in the Church and we miss him still. Dr. McDonough's editing of the essays in the book are clear and the organization of the book makes for an interesting study. What I liked most were the essays concerning the actual working of Vatican II and the parts on how the documents effect us today. A great book for those interested in revelation, the Catholic Church post-Vatican II, and the writings of some thoughtful theologians. And a fine tribute to great Church leader.
