Books : The Name of the Rose
Learned and fast because rarely does someone so intelligent find a way to jam so much thought into such a fast plot. THis book continues to be the best introduction to Eco's fiction, the one you should read before the others (and then you'll want to read the others too, but I'm not sure that the process would work the other way).

Books : Foucault's Pendulum
I have to say that I had to read this book twice to really appreciate the story. I have trudged through a great deal of literature in my time (it's my undergrad), and "Pendulum"--the first time, was among the most dense. However, I wanted to give it a second go (for no other reason than I wanted to) and I was not disappointed. I absolutely loved it.
I highly recommend this gem, even though it might take a couple of trips to enjoy the journey :-)

Seems to be a reworking of earlier books like Arthur Marwick's book BEAUTY IN HISTORY. To assume that art is
a representation of beauty of it's time is for future people to think we valued Picasso's notions of ideal form in his abstract depictions of women. Just as people falsely assume Ruben was painting beautiful women, he was doing nothing of the sort. His journals contain amble notes about how he preferred the male form. Sometimes art is just an expression or an exercise in politics, skill and who is paying the bill.

This is a collection of columns and a few speeches by a noted scholar and novelist of the medieval period. As in all collections, some pieces are better than others, but in this volume, all are good.

Of particular note is the opening piece with thoughts on paleo and neo wars. These terms were new and provocative for me.

Another highlight is the section on the media. Italy's experience in media concentration, having a media entrepreneur to take the reins of government and conflate his interest with that of the country, stands as warning. (For more on this I recommend The Sack of Rome: How a Beautiful European Country with a Fabled History and a Storied Culture Was Taken Over by a Man Named Silvio Berlusconi.) Eco describes Berlusconi's campaign to weaken the judiciary ... Read More

If you like history, here medieval history, historical fiction and Forrest Gump, you'll love Eco's Baudolino. Young peasant, Italian boy Baudolino stumbles upon Holy Roman Emperor Barbarossa in the forest as the Emperor begins a campaign against Italy. The Emperor, childless, according to Baudolino, is taken with the lad and more or less adopts him. Thus begins his great adventure. This is Baudolino's story as he recounts it to a Byzantine official whom he saves during the sacking of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. But is it true? Maybe. Unicorns, the kingdom of Prestor John, holy grail, fake relics, the drowning of Barbarossa, Baudolino is everywhere in the late 12th Century. Consummate liar? Probably. But he and Eco weave a hell of a story. Fun read. Keeps you entertained from beginning ... Read More

Many readers will probably be attracted to books like these after reading and enjoying Eco's novels, especially The Name of the Rose and Foucalt's Pendulum. If so, be warned. As I discovered, the Eco of the essay is NOT the Eco of the novels. Both Ecos are eccentric, clever and witty. However, the Eco of essays is a more radical and postmodern thinker. His topics can be seen by some as mundane. He's interested in pop culture and some of his theories are a tad obscure.

This collection is a series of loosely connected essays by Eco. It's an interesting book to read not cover-to-cover but to read an essay once in a while until the book is finished. That way the attitudes can sink in. The biggest fault I found with the book is certain essays to do with semiotics have arguments that are complex and hard to follow. ... Read More
