Books are usually written a certain way; with a plot, set characters, conflicts, et cetera. The way Tim O'Brien portrays his story, The Things They Carried, is different than most books and his incorporation of truth and fiction tend to throw the reader off. Tim O'Brien constantly contradicts himself throughout the novel, and continually tells the reader that he or she won't be able to comprehend what he is trying to explain.
My first point I would like to present is the book is full of fabrication. Right away, before the book even begins, on the copyright page, it clearly states, "This is a work of fiction. Except for a few details regarding the author's own life, all the incidents, names, and characters are imaginary." How is the reader supposed to differentiate between ... Read More

In the Lake of the Woods is an amazing journey into memory ands madness - the madness of war, the madness of past sins, the madness of staying with someone you are scared of. This book is not easy. It takes you into various levels of uncertainty and mystery. We all live with our pasts. Some are more fraught with pain than others, but all shape who we are today. The main characters of In the Lake of the Woods, John and Kathy, both have many layers of hurt and pain to deal with. There are many options presented, but none are settled on. There is mystery and depth here.

3.The Best American Short Stories of the Century (The Best American Series (TM).) from: Houghton Mifflin

I selected this audio book because I liked the idea of listening to a selection of well read stories and I thought the variety of stories looked interesting. The stories themselves are fine, but the audio book is marred by a selection of readers who lack expression and whose voice qualities are not sufficiently professional for an audio book. I expected the quality of reading to be comparable to that heard in NPR's "Selected Shorts." This isn't even close. The first story was fine, I cringed through the second, felt mildly frustrated with the reading of the third, and gave up by the 4th. Perhaps it gets better since each story is read by a different person, but I couldn't spend 12 hours finding out. For me, it was like chalk squeaking on chalkboard (if anyone remembers that) and I could listen no more.

In this memoir Tim O'Brien recounts the testing of his moral principles and the continuing broadening of his understanding of the concepts of courage and bravery. The author successfully presents the reader with compelling insights into the moral dilemmas encountered by a young man dealing with the entirety of serving as an American soldier in Vietnam, including, the draft, the expectations of family and a small mid-western town versus his views on being a part to an immoral war. Throughout the book he struggles with what it means to be courageous and brave. Mr. O'Brien imposes the time line of his experience over these struggles with his internal demons, and sets those struggles against real combat and real casualties. He captures the daily tedium, punctuated by brief episodes of terror with the matter-of-fact style of ... Read More

As a huge Tim O'Brien fan, who has read everything he has written, I still think that Going After Cacciato is his best book (although The Things They Carried and In the Lake of the Woods provide stiff competition). Cacciato tells the story of Paul Berlin, an ordinary, decent man who tries to do the best he can amid the horrific circumstances he finds himself in in Vietnam. Berlin is lost and frightened at the war. He has witnessed the traumatic deaths of several fellow soldiers. One night, in an observation post by the sea, Berlin imagines his platoon undertaking a long, complex journey after a simple-minded soldier named Cacciato who has abandoned the war--who has simply walked away, intending to hike all the way to Paris.

The novel's chapters alternate between 3 narrative realities: Berlin's disturbing memories ... Read More

I read this book as a preview for the upcoming year of Sonlight 3+4 curriculum. While I liked the writing of Across Five Aprils more than this book, Shades of Gray is a wonderful look at how easy it is to prejudge those we do not know or understand. Note: Even though I love the idea of students writing reviews, you WILL get a skewed and incomplete portrayal when you read the "kid's review" of this book.
While some of the student reviews criticized how unlikable the main character is, his ultimate change of heart is the centerpiece of the book. He has to start out unlikable to appreciate how he matures in the end.
I love Uncle Jed for his patience and wisdom. Children will see how these traits are just as valuable as the bravery of Will's father as he went off to war.
Other timely themes are touched upon in this book: ... Read More
