While I agree with some of the renewable energy issue, as an American, I have little trust of an individual that sees taking our personal liberties away for a day, see China for a Day chapter. This in an effort to "protect us" from ourselves. The last thing I need is the government, who can't even balance their own check book, tell me how to live or take my freedoms away for a day so they can push some agenda. While I'm not comparing the two, facisim starts with such beliefs. I'd read this book with a helpful spoon full of concern. Interesting book but not worth the read.

Thomas Friedman brilliantly shows how the forces of globalization have connected the world in ways never possible before. The walls, ceilings, and even floors that once separated people, societies, and countries have been flattened out. Now, a single individual has more power than any other time in history.

We must make use of all these new possibilities to succeed in a world that is more competitive and more challenging than ever before.

You have to establish a competitive advantage that differentiates you from the rest of this world. If you don't, you can't survive.

This next 50 years are the most crucial time in the history of our time. We have the opportunity to end poverty, diseases, wars, ignorance, greed, and hunger.

If we don't succeed ... Read More

I read part of this book for a Globalization class I was taking, plus a few chapters from a different book "Globalization and Its Discontents" by Joseph Stiglitz. I initially liked what I read from Friedman. It seemed positive and interesting in comparison to Stiglitz (which focused on IMF economic policies and was VERY angry). However, upon reading the whole Stiglitz book and then going back to Friedman, I found Friedman to be poorly educated in economics and a waste of my time. It is indeed a cheerleader book for Globalization and has so many holes in it you can drive a car through.

Friedman is a market fundamentalist with an agenda, which becomes very clear after reading a REAL book on economics. He embraces this "golden straightjacket" (or restrictions that globalization puts on an economy) ... Read More

Books : Updated & Expanded 2006 Edition of the World Is Flat
Friedman opines generally on how the world is flat, which is a general statement that most US readers can digest after reading the book. Yes, the advent of communication technology has accelerated the global reach of businesses around the world. However, just because businesses have offices in other countries does not make them automatically global. US business leaders must understand that technology gives reach, but not necessarily competence. The concept of culture is still key. Just because globally dispersed colleagues may all utilize Microsoft Windows does not mean that they all have the same global mindset. Friedman does present valid information, but again it is mainly from the US perspective of looking at the world through a Western lens, and not taking into account the vast majority of the world that ... This book is an informative look at current middle east Arab thought from a somewhat unconventional pro-Israel viewpoint, which deserves to be read, but should be supplemented. Friedman is a thoughtful and creative thinker as evidenced by his book The World is Flat. In Longitudes he reprints his newspaper columns from around 9-11 to the time the US invaded Iraq, which at times is repetitive, but gives a good account of his thought development at the time. His main thesis is that Arab anger toward the US stems from bad leaders, bad governments, and not primarily from Israel. His line of reasoning therefore encouraged the nation building policies that led our country into the Iraq debacle. He sees the Palestinian issue as a poor excuse for violence, and 9-11. He blames Arafat for the breakdown in peace talks, though ... Read More

Books : The World Is Flat
This is one of the most important insights presented since "Future Shock" and "Megatrends." Thomas Friedman presents a clarion call for individuals, businesses and nations facing global dynamics of a scope and speed unparalleled in human history. His perception is brilliant and his argument compelling and thorough.

One flaw is his tendency to insert his political agenda. For example, he starts one chapter with a quote from Lyndon Johnson's 'Great Society' speech. This is ironic since Friedman makes such a powerful case for a Great Society requiring that its people be empowered to be full participants in the global juggernaut now occurring. This clashes with a program that was designed to make people feel more comfortable in poverty rather than find a way out. Perhaps he is more focused on Johnson's words than ... Read More
