Don't buy this. Our Constitution is broken. It has been redacted, perverted, ignored and corrupted to where our government today bears little resemblance to what the Framers had in mind back in 1787. Consider the judiciary: Marshall in 1803 seized greater judicial power than permitted by the Constitution and elevated the Supreme Court to the point where it could strike down acts by the legislature if it deemed them "unconstitutional". As a result, today's Supreme Court is a highly politicized body using the excuse of judicial review to strike down legislative acts. Presidential power, as well, is unchecked and unbalanced. Wow! This was the first Stephen Ambrose book I ever read. Now I'm hooked. His attention to detail is incredible. How those guys survived attacks by savages, grizzly bears, and other forces of nature is hard to imagine. Ambrose takes the reader step-by-step through the journey, from the inception, all the way to the explorers' triumphant journey home, and beyond. Once you read this book, you will probably become a big Stephen Ambrose fan like me. I highly recommend this book. Mitch Paioff, Author, Getting Started as an Independent Computer Consultant

...And the verdict? After tearing out every ridiculous thing in the New Testament, all we're left with is 4 or 5 parables repeated in slightly different ways, showing not one but two different kinds of Jesus - the peaceful, forgiving Jesus, and the vengeful, cut your head off with a flaming sword Jesus. Christianity? No thanks. I enjoyed the essay TJ wrote at the front though.

The "Writings of Thomas Jefferson" is an outstanding book... Not a classic book, though: it is a compilation of many of the letters that Thomas Jefferson wrote during his long life. My only regret here, is that many of these letters, are reply to other letters. And it would be great to have, in either the same book, or another books, the "Letters to Thomas Jefferson" to better understand the topic, the whole story! Ideally, and easy cross-reference would be available! There are a few letters, that I especially recommend to my friends, but it is better if you find them on your own! This was a small, interesting book, but I found it a difficult read, due to the language used back then. Very different from today's speech. I was rather disappointed that it did not include some of his earlier life.

The book includes the Declaration of Independence which spells out the reasons for the American colonies to declare independence from Britain. Jefferson's letters to John Adams are included as well. Adams and Jefferson were long time friends but became disconnected later in their lives. Finally, they make amends close to the end of their lives. There are also letters to a French woman who Jefferson was in love with while he was Ambassador to France. My concern, however, is just how many Americans today have read this - and if not, why? It is astonishing to read even one sentence of the US Constitution for example and, given our dire national events in play, realize for perhaps a frightening instant that an issue for any state or federal appellate court might be: Does the US Consitution apply in any respect, anymore, to the way our three branches of government (the judiciary, the legislative and executive branches) work today?
