My husband hated this book. He said the author made it sound like everything was a big joke. He stopped reading it about half way through. What a disappointment.

I have no idea what Thomas Pynchon was trying to convey with 'Against the Day' but the descriptions of place and time are above outstanding. The sentences of 'Against the Day' are the best sentences ever. The book is hilarious frequently, nearly every page. Various underground paranoid attempts to find the linchpins of the world are described with the goal of moving the world but these attempts are shown not to amount to much. The counter culture currents of the day were more or less completely irrelevant to warding off the disaster of World War I that was fast approaching. Pynchon provides no positive lesson as far as I can tell. I see 'Against the Day' as providing a negative lesson rather than a positive lesson with the negative lesson being that the esoteric as an explanation best be ... Read More

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes that comprise the "Harvard Business Review Paperback Series." Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking on the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: www.hbsp.harvard.edu. The authors of various articles are among the world's most highly regarded experts on the given subject. Each volume has been carefully edited. Supplementary commentaries are also provided in most of the volumes, as is an "About the Contributors" section that usually includes suggestions of other sources that some readers may wish to explore.

In this volume, the reader is provided with eight articles. ... Read More

5.Tess of the D'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman by: Thomas Hardy
1985-01
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Tess of the D'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman
This truly is a classic and as others have said, not for everyone. Heart wrenching in the extreme. No sweetness, light and happily ever afters in this raw story of the life and times as they surely were in 19th England . Class structure, religious and moral strictures and the faults and failures of human nature are all laid bare here. Hardy writes with emotion and clarity. He pulls no punches and life in this period of history in the English countryside offered no safety net for a young girl like Tess D'Urberville.
Young Tess, barely fifteen years of age, is sent out into the world by her small rural village dwelling parents, who have newly found that they are descended from a formerly wealthy and ancient family that has all but disappeared through the centuries. This family was once well known and powerful, dating from the ... Read More

I understand basic statistics and some of the more specialised areas like design of experiments and quality techniques pretty well. This volume has proved invaluable when trying to understand those areas I'm not familiar with such as PLS and non-parametric statistics. It provides well-written overviews of topics plus back-up theory for those who need to appreciate the mathematics in more detail. A powerful aid to understanding when using a propritary statistics package.

I too, was under the impression that I could build at least one boat from this book. I was surprised to find out that I would have to purchase "plans" in order to build any of the craft in the book. Had I been aware of that, I would not have wasted my money.
(I already know how to build this type of construction.)
HINT: Read the reviews completely before ordering any of these books.

I just finished reading and comparing the introduction of this version of the text with the version published by Cambridge University Press. In the latter edition, I found the introduction to be less in the way of circumlocution, yet exceedingly lucid and pithy. Dr. Korsgaard is a pre-eminent scholar in Kantian Ethics, and her introduction alone is what renders the Cambridge edition worthy. The Oxford introduction, while insightful and generally helpful for the layperson, all to often digressed into different interpretations, none of which were too heavily detailed in their illustration. The Cambridge version is concise, as it contains all the information that is needed. It provided a clear map as to how different parts of Kant's conception connected , and thus engendered a synchronic understanding of the overall text.
