Dr. Hale's work has saved so many breastfeeding relationships from well-meaning but uninformed medical advice. As a nursing mama, I can't tell you how many times I've encountered the old "pump & dump" instructions, or even been told outright to wean my children. Thanks to Hale's guide, which fits perfectly in a diaper bag or vehicle glove box, I can do my own research right on the spot during medical appointments, and show doctors firsthand that a medication is either safe or can be substituted with a breastfeeding-friendly replacement with equal healing value.

Medications are listed in easy-to-find alphabetical order, including a quick index of common/generic/brand names. A classification system will show at a glance any warnings and allow the mother to see specific risks ... Read More

2.On Being a Missionary by: Thomas Hale

Books : On Being a Missionary
Of the four gospels, my favorite is St. Luke. Luke was a doctor and wrote as a doctor- precise, bearing on the facts, and somewhat paternally. I get the same sense from Hale's writing. Hale and his wife are physicians that have served as medical missionaries in Nepal since 1970. This book might be considered a primer on missions. For me, it was perfect. Having never served as a missionary, the book gave me an idea of what it's really like, the ups and downs, the realities of being on the mission field. In reading this book, I felt like I was sitting down with a very wise man, perhaps at a pub over a beer, and asking, "so, what's it really like to be a missionary?" and this wise man patiently taking the time to tell me. Five stars for sure, don't head for the fields without this one.

If there were a "zero" or a minus grade I could give this book, I would. The title sounded so intriguing but turned out to be nothing but a cheap ploy to attract potential buyers. The flora and fauna of Nepal do not feature in the book. The author, a "Christian" missionary physician, did not bother to study Hindu culture before going to Nepal and so commits serious offenses against the local population and their beliefs. He seems to feel no love whatsoever for the people he is claiming to take care of but expects them to say "thank you" at every turn. He looks at them and treats them with an attitude of condescension, smugness, and arrogance. In spite of being a physician, he turns down the patients that need him most desperately. I was outraged!!! He is one of the people that give Christians ... Read More

Recorded, translated, edited and annotated by African epic scholar Thomas Hale, who has, by the way, done extremely detailed work. "The Epic of Askia Mohammed" is recounted by a griot (the keeper of the spoken word)--a form of storytelling indigenous to Africa, unlike the novel, which is a European creation. A large part of the African epic poem is devoted to prayer. Another large part of the poem is recounting genealogies, as one of the griot's main jobs is linking people of the present to their past. Not a very exciting read (unless, of course, you found "Beowulf" exciting), but if you're interested in learning more about African epic poetry, this is definitely a good start.

I just purchased the updated 2006 edition from B&N. Although this book is very useful and informative, I must say I have a difficult time understanding all the medical terminology. Eventhough they attempt to give definitions of all the medical terminology, the definition itself is too complicated. I feel like I need to go to medical school to understand this book completely.

Thomas Hale's writing is beautiful and his adventures as a Christian medical missionary in Nepal are even more splendid. I just couldn't put this book down. After reading this book I have found the strength to continue plugging through my medical school requirements!

As I write, vehicles all across France are ablaze. Since October 27, 2005, thousands of cars in suburbs and neighborhoods in various corridors of the country have been burned by predominantly young French citizens descended from North Africa and West Africa. These disgruntled youth represent a class of 'de jure' French citizens who do not consider themselves 'de facto' citizens of the French polity. Like the tragic images from Hurricane Katrina in the United States, the images from France depict a nation sharply divided along racial lines. In America, the notion of a racial state is hardly something new. The case of France, in contrast, brings to the fore the often submerged reality that the French polity purports to be "color-blind" although it in fact has deep-rooted problems of race and racism ... While reading this book, I often had to stop to read passages (even entire chapters) to my husband...I just had to share! It tells in an engaging way about life in a place I can only imagine...the armchair traveller will just get completely absorbed in this description of life far away. It's funny and extremely well-written. His "Don't Let the Goats Eat the Loquat Trees" should be read first for maximum enjoyment.
