I took a year of general chemistry 25+ years ago but never needed to use it much since I pursued a career in engineering. Recently I did an early retirement and one thing I wanted to pursue for my own interest was to learn about energy, and I decided it was not enough to just read a bunch of recent articles, I decided I needed to strenthen my background in two subjects, thermodynamics and chemistry. Based on its reviews here on Amazon, I concluded that this particular text was likely to be the best choice of an up to date Chemistry textbook. I have been very pleased with it. Exactly the book needed and much less costly. It arrived in a timely fashion.

Pretty helpful to have for the course. It tends to leave out answers to the simplest questions from the beginning of the problems in each chapter but otherwise is good. For me, I could use a little more step by step answers for some of the solutions but it may may be just fine for others. Overall, I would recommend having this manual for the course.

First, make sure if you buy it used, it is explicitly stated that the CD-ROM is included. I LOVE this book. I am a homeschooling mother with a M.S. in chemistry. My daughter is gaining excellent comprehension. The text does a very good job of integrating concepts throughout the chapters. I found the ninth edition (which some of my homeschool students have) to be essentially the same with the aggravation of slight changes in the homework sets (to make college students buy expensive new books each year!)Solutions manuals are obtainable used, as well.

This is not a very good textbook and should not be considered if you desire to learn chemistry. The text is not understandable even though I have a masters in chemistry from CalTech. The organization is not well structured and it's hard to believe that people actually like this book. The writers of this book try to "cram" as much information as possible in each chapter which is NOT necessary. It could be sucessfuly done if they spread out the information and concepts. HOWEVER, he book problems are excellent. I'll give them that.
