A long, labourious read, this. One reviewer has commented that Dreiser leaves no stone unturned. I would put it rather that he leaves no pebble unturned. The book, as far as prose style is concerned is - to be quite frank - an ugly book. Even Dreiser's admirers here and elsewhere admit this.

Nevertheless, the book, a bildungsroman of the character Clyde Griffiths, leaves one, regardless of how erudite and well-read one is, unsettled and disturbed. Unlike Eugene Gant in Look Homeward, Angel or Phillip Carey in Of Human Bondage or Stephen Daedalus in A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, Clyde is not particularly artistic or intellectual - or, really, particularly much of anything. This makes for, along with Dreiser's, at times, simply horrid prose, a book with which one ... Read More

"Sister Carrie" is a novel that I happened upon accidently. I ordered it when I thought I was ordering another and it was delivered to my door. Since it was recommended for a creative writing class, I figured I might as well read it since I love a long, epic novel. Little did I know what I was getting into.
Carrie reads abruptly Brittish at first, with all the proper nouns and pronouns making it seem, straight away, like a snobbish and bourgoise book. Once I got past the first few pages, however, I was at once intrigued and secretly invited to hear, not read, the tale of an original fem fatale.
As I read, I could actually hear the dialog and ambience of the era, horse-drawn carriages, the buzz of a cafes, restaurants and lodges. And, of course, the rather brutish brother-in-law whom ... Read More

This book is a must read for any investor. It makes clear that economic bubbles and financial crises have the same causes in all centuries: excessive debt, secured by speculative assets. Once the collateral falls in price, the lender requires to repay the debt or add more collateral. Since the borrower have used excessive leverage, he is unable to handle the debt and goes bankrupt, which leaves the lender with illiquid assets. Here are some examples:

1871: Frank Cowperwood have used stocks of Philadelphia's railroads as a collateral to huge loans, and when the Great Chicago Fire sparked a financial panic, he could neither repay the debt nor add more collateral, thus became insolvent.
1929: Widespread use of margin, of up to 90% was one of the reasons of the Great Depression. The investor could ... Read More

This is a great novel, more compact than Sister Carrie and somehow even more engrossing. The novel has a subtle, constant, building intensity such that it stayed in my head when I was away from it, and I actively anticipated resuming it as soon as possible. When I started it I thought it might be a sort of repackaged Sister Carrie, but it's not. Jennie Gerhardt is a distinctive novel, and just adds confirmation of the obvious--Dreiser can plot a big story and develop complex, emotionally affecting characters as well as anyone. I did not expect the wallop this novel packs. I'm puzzled that it's not widely and popularly regarded as a classic. I think it should be.
