I purchased this for my granddaughter because my daughter wanted to read it to her! So, I think I bought it for both of them. All my children were raised on this and the other classic Dr. Seuss books. It's a fun thing to read for young and old. It gets the giggles going at bed time and beyond. What more can I say? It's a children's classic written in true Dr. Seuss style!

Okay, so this is probably as preachy as Dr. Suess gets, and it just might get on the nerves of some people, but the tree hugger in me salutes him for it, even as he paints a grimmer picture of environmental destruction than Al Gore ever thought of. Even so, it's clearly Suess with his imaginative worlds and funny characters. It's a solemn book of warning that it pretty darn good into scaring kids into being careful with the environment. And that's not a bad thing.

that seem so loud in the dark. Now we just try to decide which one of his characters is making the noise. My little one thinks the artwork is really neat.

Well, this is the Seuss book that riles the feathers of some adults. It's got a definite anti-war theme and deals with the consequences of a military arms escalation. Who's at war? It's the Yooks and the Zooks. Essentially the same sorts of people, they clash over whether bread should be eaten butter side up or down. The story is told from a little boys (?) perspective and is the only Seuss book I can recall that ends on an ominous note. "Grandpa!" I shouted. "Be careful! Oh gee! Who's going to drop it? This book started out in similar fashion to the original Cat in the Hat book, but then it turned ugly and a little disturbing. Once again, the children are left alone, this time responsible for shoveling snow while the mother goes into town. The Cat in the Hat shows up and invites himself in the house, where he makes himself at home by eating cake in the bathtub. When he exits the tub, there is a pink ring that needs to be cleaned up. The cat uses various objects and surfaces in the house to clean the ring, but it eventually winds up outside in the snow. The Cat enlists the help of other cats that are under his hat to "kill the mess", using pop guns. The more the cats shoot, the more the spots spread. This book introduced "paradigm shifting" into my intellectual vocabulary before I even knew what such a thing was. Many, many, many years ago (Nixon was President, I think) I read this and was changed. I can remember the the images, the textures, the smells (Ah! The ditto machine and its purple perfume!) and all my surroundings. I was sitting in the elementary school library, facing northwest toward the door. Lured by the title and the premise, I had taken the volume to my assigned seat ("Library" was a class back then, as it should have been) and quickly devoured it. This is a cute book and my 3 y/o likes it, but I was expecting it to be more like, well, a dictionary. Some pictures have no definition at all, just the word above it, and many of the definitions are along the lines of "babies do it" for the word "cry" It's also illustrated by PD Eastman, not Dr. Seuss. So all in all, if you want another Dr. Seuss/PD Eastman book, you'll be pleased, but if you're thinking, "Hey! A preschool dictionary, how cool!" you'll probably be disappointed.

We are big Doctor Seuss fans and are attempting to get the entire collection for our daughter. Like the book, just too similar to Fox in Socks. Nothing but tongue twisters and no real story. Great to have if your trying to collect all Dr Seuss books. If completing the collection is not important to you, I would only chose this if you don't already have Fox in Socks

My daughter really enjoys this book, especially the parts that have some good rhythm, like "Left foot. Right foot. Feet. Feet. Feet. Oh, how many feet you meet!" You can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss!
