I am a devoted reader of House Beautiful. Its monthly arrival brightens my entire day. Past issues are neatly stored in special holders and referenced again and again. However, I am sorely disappointed in this book. When I buy a a book entitled "500 Makeovers", I expect before & afters, how-tos, and helpful hints, don't you?

This book has absolutely nothing to do with makeovers. Each page shows one finished, polished, professionally done room with a tip in the margin that may or may not have anything to do with the photo shown. These tips are so completely obvious (things like "mirrors can make a space feel larger", "lower light bulb wattage for coziness") that there's really no sense in reading any of the text in this book. There's not a before photo in sight here, ... Read More

This is a good book for getting ideas for your remodel. Although some great products are pictured, and few items are mentioned by name, the majority of the products featured are not, so you're on your own as far as tracking them down. A resource guide would have been helpful. This is a good guide to what's available, however.

As an Interior Decorator who is really just starting out in this career field, I found window treatments to be my biggest challenge. There is nothing difficult about choosing great drapes, but I know from experience that window treatments can be true problem-solvers too, and I wanted to master the ability to match a great look with a great solution. This book offers ideas for filtering light to reduce a harsh afternoon glare, as well as how to combine modern window dressings with more traditional furniture settings. There are plenty of pictures, and I especially like the sections on various types of hardware and problem windows. There are plenty of books and magazines that inspire with beautiful photos but as a decorator, I do have my own inspirations for the look I want to achieve. What ... Read More
