I had never heard of Tess Gerritsen prior to Amazon offering a free Kindle download of "The Surgeon." It sounded interesting, so I gave it a try. I'm so glad I did!

As another reviewer stated, it was similar to the style of "Silence of the Lambs" or "Hannibal." Each of the main characters are fully fleshed out, and their individual personalities are very distinct. I found myself empathizing with Detective Moore, disliking (at least initially) Jane Rizzoli, and fearing for Dr. Cordell.

The medical terminology was over my head a few times, but it lends credence to the scenes in the ER. The author effectively places you in the midst of all the action, and you sometimes forget you're reading a book.

There aren't many books that I have difficulty putting down, but ... Read More

The Bone Garden starts off in the present day. Julia Hammill is clearing the garden of her new house in the outskirts of Boston, when she uncovers some old bones. When the experts are called in, it is discovered that they date back to the 1830s. Through contact with a relative of the previous owner of the house, the story of how the bones got there is slowly revealed.

Set mainly in the year 1830, this novel gives a depressing and graphic look at the harshness of life back in that era, particularly in the area of childbirth, were the lack of decent hygiene, led to many, many unnecessary deaths. If that wasn't bad enough, in this novel, a serial killer, is murdering nurses who have worked on the maternity ward, of the Boston hospital, where the story is set.

I have to admit ... Read More

An array of Tess Gerritsen novels is like a box of chocolates: Each piece is a satisfying treat, each is like the others in some way, but in some way each piece is unique. It is only a matter of selecting one.

In THE SINNER, Tess Gerritsen provided me with a marvelous escape from reality aboard a magic carpet complete with totally believable characters in whom I invested, exotic locations, spine-tingling suspense, and Boston as the locale, where the weather palpably evokes the background mood.

It is not quite as plain and simple as the two other Tess Gerritson novels I read BODY DOUBLE, VANISH) but it, amazingly, remains clear and un-confusing, allowing me to read at a good pace, breathlessly, to see what happens next without having to go back to previous pages to try to remember ... I must say, I'm confused at the reviews labeling this as "The Surgeon 2". It's nothing like the first book. The Surgeon was clever, suspenseful and gory. This is dull, bland and aggravating.

In a nutshell: Nothing happens. The first few chapters start out great. I was at first thinking that this book was reading better than The Surgeon. Then it falls off and it falls off hard. Absolutely nothing happens. I can't state that enough. Nothing happens.

What's worse, is that this book literally repeats itself. Scenes are redundant and pointless. And there are parts that contradict. The woman who evaluates Hoyt while in prison describes him to us. Yet we read in his letters to her the complete opposite of what she told us he said. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. And why in the world is information ... Read More

***Spoilers****This is my first book by this author. I've heard a lot about her and decided to give her a try. After this book has been in my TBR for over a year, I finally settled down and dove in. Sadly, I wasn't too impressed. I thought the book started off great, but as soon as Jane and her team of friends showed up, I was turned off. The whole hospital hostage situation was completely unbelievable and there's a sense that the author isn't technologically caught up with the times. A VCR tape...really? Everything is digital nowadays and even if the House Mother was working with something this old, it's surprising that Jane and Gabriel still had a VCR. A man like Joe, who has trip wire all around his house would have surely transferred the tape to something downloadable. They would have massed emailed that to every ... Read More

This is a very good thriller/mystery. What separates it from most in this genre is the excellent cast of characters. The "stars" are Detective Rizoli and M.E. Dr. Isles; but they are surrounded by a terrific cast. The head of The Mephisto Club is an eery presence who keeps cropping up. His attitude and the attitudes of those around him add the cherry on this sundae of suspense.

Of course, the book starts with a hideous murder. Soon there are others, with flashbacks and lots of references to demons and writings of evil and demons from the Bible and more ancient texts. Are these Satanic murders? Or murders by Satan's agents on earth? Symbols are left at every murder scene that lead the investigators to the answer - or are they meant to lead them astray?

The author does a nice job of mixing flashbacks ... Read More

I have read many of Gerritsen's novels and the one thing I appreciate the most is the accuracy and detail of the sciences. Gerristsen takes the time to write accurately about her topics. In this novel in particular, I enjoyed the attention to detail regarding NASA operations and space craft, as I am an aerospace engineer myself, it would have been hard to read a inaccurate book. Hats off, this book is great, with lots of suspense. It will keep you reading all night. Trust me, I know, I read it in a day.
