Timothy Zahn continues the incredible story of the New Republic's efforts to repel the attacks of the formidable Grand Admiral Thrawn in Dark Force Rising, the second volume of a trilogy. Set five years after Return of the Jedi, this book is an excellent continuation of one of the most interesting storylines in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Since the trilogy was written in the early 1990's, some details have been contradicted by the prequel films and the immense growth of the saga, but the overall impact of the story is undiminished and things fit together remarkably well.

The book opens with Thrawn's assault upon smuggler Talon Karrde's base of operations on the planet Myrkr. Karrde is struggling to maintain his profitable neutrality in this conflict, but the open attack by ... Read More

The Age of Apocalypse satisfies the inherent "What-If?" cravings that most readers are prey to: what is professor Xavier had died and his dream along with him? The Age of Apocalypse answers this questions in the most dramatic way possible.

First off, the technical issues: as mentioned, although this is labeled Book 2 by Marvel, it is in fact "Book 1", with the actual Book 1 containing one-off or self-contained stories that are not continuous in the main storyline. You may pick up this book without the previous one and not feel like you just jumped in midway.

... assuming you are already familiar with the X-Universe. There are at least 50 Characters in this Graphic Novel, almost all of whom are modified versions of existing characters in the mainstream Marvel Universe. As a casual ... Read More

Caps the end of a truly interesting time in Marvel's history. The reimagining of various X-Men characters, coupled with an updated history of many other Marvel icons, bring this memorable series to a close. This issue continues with much of the high drama from earlier issues and leads to many satisifying conclusions along with quite a number of tragic ones. A truly great read!

in volume 4 the age of apocalypse comes to an end in the issue xmen omega. however for some reason there are more issues included afterwards that really have little to do with AoA. the AoA series is great but i think these collections could have been better. they could have left out some of the stuff in volume one and all the stuff after xmen omega in volume 4 and made it into three volumes.

Accomplished author Jodi Picoult (Sister's Keeper), with her nifty plot twists and her memorable characters, is offered an opportunity to write about... Wonder Woman.

She accepts the request because her kids think it is really cool. And, she was a Wonder Woman fan from long back, she writes.

This graphic novel is a collection of stories from the newer, sexier, Wonder Woman. The story begins with a reminder that Wonder Woman has killed a bad guy who was controlling Superman and Batman. The other superheroes criticize her for the killing; she should have found a different way to free Superman. Somehow, she decides to be a typical human, and gets a job as a Special Agent for the Department of Metahuman Affairs, like most women do (note the sarcasm here). She has to learn about latte terminology, ... Read More

It is hard to imagine a much more wretched year for Wonder Woman than 2007; the year began with Allan Heinberg's perenially delayed and sadly misguided opening arc still struggling to get out; intermixed with these issues we got Jodi Picoult's equally off-base offering, and then "Amazons Attack", an atrocity that seemed almost tailor-made to destroy the character's history. By story's end, Diana's people were turned into a bunch of barbarous morons responsible for gleeful mass-murder. With issue fourteen, Gail Simone, the industry's preeminent female writer (not a particularly wide field, to be sure) and a great writer in general, took over the the title; this volume collects her first six issues, #14-19. What can she make out of this car wreck of a relaunch?

This trade contains two stories. The first, Simone's ... Read More

Fans of Harley Quinn should purchase this without hesitation; it delivers the first seven issues of her y2k series in a beautifully bound hardcover.

Visually, the pages here feature mostly fantastic, seductive, pin-up style panels of Harley mixed with some cartoon like panels that resemble her in the Batman animated series. One has to assume the later is done because of time constraints, but whatever. This is more an observation than a complaint.

The stories here are fairly light weight, but are filled with enough action, humor and dialog here to keep things engaging.

More Harley Quinn please! She's perhaps the most interesting "super villainess" in the history of comics.

In the mid-90s Dark Horse launched a superhero line called Comics Greatest World (later Dark Horse Heroes) with Ghost as one of their breakout stars.

This series omits her first appearance (the Dark Horse Heroes Ominbus has it) but takes on the first several issues of her series.

Ghost is a literal ghost, a young woman killed and returned from the dead with no memories of who she was but a burning hatred of men who hurt women.

Throughout this book she takes on a series of creepy superpowered misogynists in her quest to find her killer.

Early art by Adam Hughes is very good and a tough act to follow but the artists do a good job of keeping up the high standards. The design is worth mentioning too, everything has a sheen of 30s art deco, cars, buildings and even the fonts give this ... Read More

"Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do" was a mini series that started in 2002 and did not end until 2005.

Kevin Smith, who wrote the fantastic "Daredevil: Guardian Devil," is the writer here and he does a very good job over the first three chapters. However, due to a ridiculously long hiatus, the series was not finished for three long years.

The story revolves around a villainous low-level mutant named Mr. Brownstone who is a teleporter. He's smuggling drugs and getting wealthy clients to overdose. One of his victims was Peter Parker's students and another victim happened to be a good friend of Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat. After a contentious reunion, Spidey and Cat team up to take down Brownstone. The story takes an odd turn where the hiatus kicks in and it never really recovers. The focus is ... Read More
