Great follow up book. Now eagerly anticipating book no:3.

I only discovered Terry Brooks as an author this year, but feel a little like when I first read The Lord of The Rings way back in the late 60's. Fortunately he seems to have written a great many more books so lot's of treats in store.

I had to spend the whole day reading it!

This is a book I've been waiting for--a continuation of the demon series, connecting it to the Shannara series. I'm calling it horror instead of fantasy, because that's what the tone feels like to me--and because the demon trilogy was horror. Barnes & Noble calls it "dark fantasy," but isn't that really just another term for horror?

It's a post-apocalyptic world, a hundred years or so after Angel Fire East. Humankind has gathered into small groups for safety and survival, living in abandoned sports arenas or office buildings. And then there are those on the outside, like the boy Hawk and his little band of children. Mistrusting adults and mistrusted by them, the children form a family of their own, and live by scavenging and bartering.

The humans are in danger from territorial ... Read More

Angel Fire East isn't an appropriate name for this book. It should have been named something else because there's one small reference to the title which has nothing to do with the story. Whatever. However, it is a great book. Here we get a glimpse into the life of John Ross once more and Nest Freemark as well. They join forces to save the Gypsy Morph from the Void and it's demons. It's riveting through it all. I've read it once before and still couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next book coming out in August. Highly, highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the series!!

Stops using his magic, stops following his nightmarish dreams of the future ... and eventually - seemingly - the dreams go away, eventually his link to the magic appears to go away. He is still crippled, he still requires his black staff - the token of his Knighthood - in order to walk, but he no longer utilizes it for anything else but a walking staff. I came to know Terry Brook through the Sword of Shannara and his subsequent books thereafter. Having read around 8 or 9 Shannara books Running With the Demon is a refreshing change of pace. Brooks presents a believable present day world, yet still manages to infuse it with the magic and wonder that makes his Shannara material so enjoyable. Terry Brooks is slowly making me a believer.

First King helped to answer a lot of the questions I had about the Sword of Shannara trilogy, such as the history of the creation of the actual sword and how Jerle failed at defeating the dark forces. It also brought into play the black elfstone, giving us a little more information about this mysterious stone.

The book was relatively short for Brooks, considering it was a one book stand alone novel, but this might not be a bad attribute for someone new to fantasy.

If you are new to fantasy and Terry Brooks, this would be a great place to start. But I'd suggest that you also get the Sword of Shannara so that you can go immediately from First King to Sword so that bits and pieces of the history from First King are still fresh in your mind. This will help to makes sense of things in Sword, allowing ... Read More

The people who are giving this book 5 stars either read it when it first came out in the 1970's or are shills for the author/publisher. Five stars for this nonsense? I'm glad I got this book for free. LOL.

Terry Brooks had a good idea for a story so it's a shame that it turned out as poorly as it did. This may be the worst written book to ever land between hard covers. Good fantasy has an element of rationality; this book is a testament to the "escaping the avalanche..." school of writing. The characters are shallow, the adventures are trite. It's rare that I don't finish a book once I begin to read it, but there was no way I could get through this dribble. If you MUST read this, at least buy a second-hand copy; using paper to print more copies of this is nothing less than a sin.

I've been and remain an avid Terry Brooks reader, I've got every book in hard back on my shelf, but this "experiment" with a graphic novel was a big disappointment. It wasn't that I didn't find interest in the story, it was actually very appealing, but the format was horrible, it made the story move way too fast, and within 1 hour I was through it and it was collecting dust; a pure first for a TB fan and a big let down.
