I ate this book up with rapt joy! And halfway through i realized i knew the author - from France in 1970! It is just the most poetic, honest, juicy, deep-swimming book - I recommend it to anyone who loves the call of the open road!

Having ridden off-road the length of Baja in Mexico and done other adventure riding, I've been looking for books on the subject. This book seems to be one of the better ones out there, and covers a majority of the information needed to have a successful ride in and to other countries. The photography is also very good. I recommend it.

This is an excellent read for anyone who enjoys riding motorcycles, and has had thoughts of riding one to other countries. Ted Simon has wonderful style of writing, and this book does a good job as a stand alone piece, even though it references his previous book of his around the world ride from 1973. He does well in creating images of the people he meets, and places he goes. My only criticism is I wish he had put maps at the beginning of the chapters showing where he was at that point of his journey. This would have helped me to better understand and visualize the part of the world he was in.

I read (and re-read) Jupiter's Travels pretty much when it came out in the 1970s. This is a very fine follow-up - and hard to put down - (good enough to loan to my literary friend), that just goes to show that it's ok to be human.

Details concerning the birth of his child are not what I was expecting for a "motorcycle story". The fact that he came to America and found a rental house to live in just isn't that interesting to me. If you want a book about his trip, this isn't it.

I love Ted Simon's writing for his honesty, integrity, his luminous descriptions of people and places, his empathy, revealing of his inner thoughts and his philosophy of life. He makes you wish you were half as good. I'd walk to the Arctic Circle with him tomorrow. Eagerly awaiting more.

A colorless subject, Water; an arcane topic, Irrigation. Not the usual recipe for a rousing read. But hold on to your bookmark! This is a fascinating tale, with feisty characters so vividly wrought that they jump from the page. The writing is as lyrical and eloquent as in any novel you'll find on the shelf. If you love reading about "the winning of the west," live in Northern or Central California, or drink from the tap in Southern California (thus exempting leotarded runners clutching designer water), you have a great story famously told, waiting in this soft covered gem. Mulholland move over!
