Within the book's 65 chapters, you are treated to a true tale of international espionage. Alex Hawke is James Bond with real human flaws. His story is interesting and complex, if you can wade through the first part of the book.

Up until almost Part Two, reading the book was a chore. My will kept me reading, not a gripping story. Although the story in Part One was cohesive and somewhat interesting, almost every chapter switches to a different character's story. Like the movie Vantage Point -- great idea, but the execution gets old after a while. The author uses this technique later in Part Two, but less frequently and the tale has picked up enough speed to keep you interested. Also, part one seemed to be provide a lot of context and background for charachters I just didn't care ... Read More

The Alex Hawke saga continues. Terrorist lurking in the jungles of the Amazon plotting to destroy the United States with remote control nastiness! Fantastic story that challenges your imagination, with robot big rigs, jungle crawlies, robot tanks and super human endurance.
A re-cast James Bond, that gets the girl and then personally takes out the bad guys with all his special toys and super bad buddies. Ted Bell rides the headlines and the terroist / imigrant histeria pumped to the max.

Whether you enjoy Ted Bell's HAWKE depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for the next James Bond, you may be disappointed, unless you're a fan of those campy Roger Moore flicks from the 1970s.

Like James Bond, the main character of this novel is a 37-year old British spy, with good looks and money and pretty much every advantage a man can have. For whatever reason, he takes assignments from the US Secretary of State, who happens to be a sexy Latina bombshell who isn't above offering a little phone sex to our strapping hero. The plotline of HAWKE involves a stolen piece of ex-Soviet weaponry, a plot to overthrow Cuba, and some long-hidden pirate treasure.

Needless to say, all of this is written in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Still, while HAWKE is pobably not meant ... Read More

A great "airplane book". I was intrigued by a previous reviewer who motivated me to make a purchase when he commented something to the effect that "if you are an insitutionalized moron, buy this book". If being a graduate of Stanford, Georgetown and Rhode Island College[institutioanlized or not] makes me a moron - so be it. I found the story line better company in the middle seat of a 737 from BOS to ATL than most of my fellow passengers. The yarn was interesting, at some points even riviting and throughout told in the manner of a Celtic Shanachie. Shakespear Mr. Bell is not; but nowhere in all his blurbs do I see that he, his editors or his publishers make that claim. Buy the volume and enjoy.

This is the second Ted Bell book I've read. The first was "Hawke." Perhaps I should have cut my losses. Bell's writing and research have improved but "Pirate" is still burdened with hollow characters and jarring implausibilities. In providing fast-paced action and a lively plot, Bell has sacrificed all else.

Bell's target audience would seem to be 18-year-old military enlistees with time on their hands. As for myself, I cannot suspend disbelief long enough to enjoy a Bell novel.
